Digression

There are twelve surviving species of deer (Cervidae), with reindeer being one of the subspecies. Reindeer are the only deer where the females grow antlers.

Both males and females grow antlers in the summer, but males shed theirs in the beginning of winter while the females don’t shed theirs until spring (after birthing the calves). That means all Santa’s reindeer must be female! Nifty, huh?
