Categories of Water Damage

In the restoration-from-damage world, we sometimes talk about “categories of water” instead of “categories of water damage” as if we’re debating the merits of sparkling vs. still water. Instead, we’re using the following definitions:

Clean water comes from water mains that go into your house. The water is safe for skin contact and drinking. Because mold spores are always present, if there is extra moisture (even high humidity is enough) for longer than 24 to 48 hours, mold or other microbial growth will start developing, pushing it into the next category.

Gray water comes from water that has been left long enough to host microbial growth or from dishwashers, washing machines, or other appliances. It may contain detergents, fungi, or other contaminants. Gray water may irritate the skin and soft tissues and is unsafe to drink, and it gets worse with time.

Blackwater is highly contaminated. It may contain urine, sewage, animal carcasses or other biohazards, chemical waste, or gray water that has not been removed.
