Monsoon Moisture and Thunderstorms in San Diego?

North American Monsoon
Did you know that monsoon moisture from Mexico can contribute to summer thunderstorms in San Diego? According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA), an intraseasonal weather system, called a Madden-Julian Oscillation pattern, can have a significant impact on regions that experience rainy seasons during the Summer, which in turn can impact rainfall in the San Diego region. Last year we experienced thunderstorms from the desert regions all the way to the coast that caused flash flooding and closed roadways. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has years of experience working on storm damage cleanup and restoration jobs all over the city and offers some tips from the National Weather Service to stay safe in the event you are caught in a severe thunderstorm:
- If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to get struck by lightning
- Stay inside a sturdy building or shelter that can protect you from lightning, hail, and damaging winds
- Stay away from windows
- Bring your pets inside
- Postpone outdoor activities until the storm has passed
