Santa Ana Winds Cause Damage to Homes in San Diego?
11/21/2022 (Permalink)
Our San Diego City, South West team, responded to property damage emergencies last month when powerful Santa Ana Winds blew through Southern California. The Santa Ana winds are the most common in the fall when they bring hot, dry weather and strong downslope winds from inland to the coastal regions of Southern California. Although they are more common in the fall, they can occur at any time of the year.
In 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, these winds forced big rigs to overturn on major freeways and caused significant wind damage. Because the winds are so hot and dry, they also have fanned the flames of wildfires.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) suggests securing objects like furniture, gutters, and downspouts to prevent wind damage. Additionally:
- Make sure that your dog’s house, garbage cans, and sports equipment are stored away or tied down
- Seal cracks and gaps to prevent the wind from coming in
- Trim trees and branches regularly. Your home should be at least a full-grown tree’s height away from the base of any tree, usually about 40 feet away.
