Is Your Home in San Diego Ready for Wildfire Season?

It’s wildfire season in California, and CALFIRE is urging all residents to prepare to defend their homes and businesses from flying embers and brush fires. Our San Diego City, South West team offers these helpful tips from the National Fire Protection Association for creating defensible space around your property:
Start by choosing fire-resistant building materials and limiting the amount of flammable vegetation in three home ignition zones.
- Trim branches that overhang the home, porch, and deck
- Prune branches of large trees up to 6 to 10 feet from the ground
- Remove plants containing resins, oils, and waxes
- Use crushed stone or gravel instead of flammable mulches o to 5 feet around the house
- Keep your landscape in good condition
The defensible space around your home should be a 100-foot radius from any structure. You are not required to cross your property line to clear the 100 feet. The neighboring property owner may be required to clear the additional distance by the fire agency.
