Indoor Holiday Light Safety Tips: Keep Your San Diego Home Safe from Electrical Fires?
12/3/2024 (Permalink)
We are fire damage restoration leaders in San Diego.
Happy Holiday wishes from our local San Diego City, South West team! Decorating your home with holiday lights brings joy and warmth to the season, but improper lighting can lead to electrical fires. Before you hang up your indoor holiday lights, inspect them carefully for any signs of damage. Frayed wires, broken bulbs, or loose connections can be fire hazards and should be replaced immediately.
Only use lights certified for indoor use, and avoid overloading electrical outlets or power strips, as exceeding the limit can overheat the device and potentially cause a fire. Make sure to use surge protectors when plugging in multiple strands of lights.
Always turn off or unplug your holiday lights when leaving the house or going to bed. This simple step can prevent electrical fires from occurring when you’re not around to monitor them.
If you’re using a Christmas tree, think about changing to more energy-efficient LED lights. LED lights produce less heat and reduce fire risks. Also, avoid hanging lights near flammable materials like curtains, furniture, or paper decorations.
By taking these precautions, you can safely enjoy the sparkle of holiday lights without worrying about potential fire hazards.

Fire Escape Planning for Families: Be Prepared During Residential Fire Awareness Month in San Diego?
10/1/2024 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24/7 in San Diego.
Our San Diego City, South West team is a trusted leader in fire damage restoration services. Creating and practicing a fire escape plan is one of the most effective ways to protect your family from a fire. During Residential Fire Awareness Month this October, develop a plan that everyone in your household understands and can follow.
Start by identifying two exits from each room in your home, typically a door and a window. Please make sure these exits are accessible and that everyone knows how to open them quickly. If your home has multiple levels, consider investing in escape ladders for the upper floors.
Next, it's crucial to designate a safe meeting place outside your home where everyone will gather after escaping. This should be a location a safe distance from the house, such as a neighbor's yard or a specific tree. A designated meeting point will ensure everyone's safety and organize the situation.
Practice your fire escape plan with your family at least twice a year, including at night when everyone is asleep. This will help ensure that everyone knows what to do and can evacuate quickly and calmly if a fire occurs.
By taking the time to create and rehearse your fire escape plan, you're giving your family the best chance to stay safe in a fire.

Top Tips to Prevent Cooking Fires and Keep Your Home Safe in Sherman Heights?
9/24/2024 (Permalink)
We are highly trained and certified to restore fire damage in San Diego.
For years, our San Diego City, South West team has been restoring fire damage in Sherman Heights. Cooking fires are among the most common causes of residential fires, but they are often preventable with a few safety practices. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of kitchen fires, so always stay in the kitchen while cooking is underway, especially when using high heat or frying. If you must leave the kitchen, turn off the stove briefly before leaving the room.
Kitchen towels, paper towels, and wooden utensils should be stored away from the stovetop to prevent them from catching fire. Turn pot handle inward to prevent accidental spills, which can lead to burns and fires. It is also wise to have a fire extinguisher within easy reach and know how to use it effectively.
If cooking grease catches fire, do not attempt to put out the fire with water. Instead, smother the fire with a metal lid or baking soda and turn off the heat source. A lid or a fire blanket nearby can be a quick and effective way to suffocate flames.
Regularly clean cooking appliances and surfaces to prevent grease build-up, which can easily ignite. By adopting these safety measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of a cooking fire and keep your kitchen safe.

Fire Erupts From Portable Fan in Encanto Home?
9/17/2024 (Permalink)
We are fire damage restoration leaders in San Diego!
Our local San Diego City, South West team is a leader in fire damage restoration in Encanto. Portable fans are a popular solution for cooling homes but can pose fire hazards if improperly maintained or used. Understanding how these risks occur and taking preventive measures can help keep your home safe.
Electrical Overload
Electrical overload is one of the primary ways a portable fan can cause a fire. Plugging the fan into an overloaded power strip or using an inappropriate extension cord can lead to overheating. Always plug fans directly into wall outlets and avoid using extension cords.
Faulty Wiring
The wiring inside portable fans can deteriorate over time. Frayed cords, loose connections, or exposed wires can ignite nearby materials. Regularly inspect your fan for signs of wear and replace it if you notice damage.
Dust and Debris Accumulation
Dust and debris can build up inside the motor and other components of a portable fan. This accumulation can cause the motor to overheat, increasing the fire risk. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep your fan operating safely.
Improper Placement
Placing a fan too close to flammable materials like curtains, bedding, or papers can also lead to a fire. Ensure your fan is on a stable, flat surface and away from combustible items.

Encanto Residents Create Evacuation Plans for Wildfire Season?
7/30/2024 (Permalink)
San Diegans trust us to restore their wildfire damage!
Creating a wildfire escape plan is essential for ensuring your safety during the wildfire season. Wildfires can spread rapidly in San Diego County, leaving little time to react. Our San Diego City, South West team offers these tips for preparing an effective escape plan:
First, familiarize yourself with your community's evacuation routes and know multiple ways out of your neighborhood. Map these routes and practice them regularly. Ensure everyone in your household understands the plan and participates in drills.
Next, assemble an emergency kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, and a first aid kit. Keep this kit easily accessible, and prepare one for each family member.
Designate a safe meeting place outside the fire-affected area where your family can reunite if separated. Also, identify an out-of-town contact who can help coordinate family communications.
If you have pets, include them in your plan. Make sure you have pet carriers and supplies ready for quick evacuation. Additionally, plan for the specific needs of family members with disabilities or medical conditions.
Stay informed by signing up for local emergency alerts. During a wildfire, keep your car's gas tank full, park facing the direction of escape, and always heed evacuation orders promptly. A well-prepared escape plan can save lives and reduce panic during a wildfire emergency.

Damaged Stovetop Heating Element Sparks Kitchen Fire in Logan Heights Home?
7/23/2024 (Permalink)
We restore residential fire damage in San Diego 24/7.
Our San Diego City, South West team is trained and certified to restore fire damage in Logan Heights. Stovetops are a common kitchen appliance that can pose a significant fire risk if not used and maintained properly. One of the leading causes of kitchen fires is unattended cooking. Never leaving the stove unattended while it’s in use is crucial. Even a momentary distraction can lead to a fire starting and spreading rapidly.
Another essential preventive measure is keeping the stovetop clean and free of grease buildup. Grease and food debris can ignite easily and cause a fire. Regularly wiping down the stovetop and ensuring that burners and drip pans are residue-free can help prevent this risk.
Properly maintaining the stovetop’s electrical components is also vital. Faulty wiring or damaged heating elements can spark and start a fire. Regular inspections and professional maintenance can identify and fix any potential issues before they become dangerous.
Additionally, keeping flammable objects away from the stovetop is essential, such as dish towels, pot holders, and paper towels. These items can catch fire quickly if they come into contact with a hot burner. Homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of stovetop fires in their kitchens by following these safety tips and maintaining vigilance while cooking.

Palm Trees Increase Risk of Fire Damage to San Diego Homes?
7/16/2024 (Permalink)
We restore residential fire damage in San Diego.
Our San Diego City, South West team wants everyone to be safe from fire. Certain tree species and vegetation are particularly flammable, as follows:
Palm trees, commonly found in San Diego, are surprisingly flammable due to their fibrous bark and dry, dead fronds that hang beneath the green foliage.
Eucalyptus trees are another significant fire hazard. Known for their high oil content, Eucalyptus trees can catch fire easily and burn intensely, often spreading flames quickly due to the volatile oils in their leaves and bark. Similarly, pine trees, especially the native Coulter and Torrey pines, contain resinous sap that ignites readily and fuels fierce fires.
Chaparral, a dominant shrubland vegetation in San Diego, is also highly flammable. This dense thicket of shrubs, including species like Manzanita and Chamise, can act as a significant fire hazard. The plants' low moisture content and high resin levels allow them to burn rapidly and with high heat, making chaparral a major contributor to wildfire spread.
Dry grasses and weeds, such as wild oats and mustard plants, further exacerbate the fire risk. These plants dry out quickly and can act as tinder, easily igniting and carrying fire to larger vegetation and nearby structures.

Exploding Oven Causes Fire Damage in Logan Heights?
9/19/2023 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.
Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year in Logan Heights. Although very rare, gas ovens can explode and cause fire damage. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, do not use any electrical switches, appliances, or flames in the area, as they could ignite the gas. Leave the house immediately and call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-611-7343 from a safe distance.
Here are some of the most common reasons a gas oven may pose safety issues:
Faulty Gas Valve or Igniter: Gas ovens rely on a gas valve and an igniter to control the flow of gas and ignite it to produce a flame for cooking. If these components become faulty or malfunction, there is a possibility of a gas leak or improper ignition, which could lead to a dangerous buildup of gas and result in an explosion.
Blocked Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is crucial for gas ovens to ensure the proper release of combustion byproducts. If the ventilation system is blocked or restricted, it can lead to the accumulation of gas, increasing the risk of an explosion.
If you notice any unusual behavior from your oven, such as irregular flames, strange odors, or unusual noises, stop using it and have it inspected by a qualified technician.

East Village Home Damaged by Flying Embers?
7/25/2023 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24 hours a day in San Diego County.
Our local San Diego City, South West team is a trusted leader in fire damage remediation services in East Village. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), explains that windblown embers can travel up to five miles ahead of a burning fire. Here are some tips from the NFPA for preventing windblown embers from entering attics and crawl spaces through vents:
Inlet Vents
Gable end vents and other vent openings are vulnerable to windblown embers when the face of the vent is perpendicular to the wind flow, while embers are less likely to pass through vents with a face that is parallel to the wind flow. Therefore, soffit eave construction is preferred to open eaves.
Outlet Vents
Opt for a ridge that is rated to resist wind-driven rain. These vents have an external baffle at the vent inlet.
Turbine Vents
Turbine vents also help keep embers out, but you should attach a piece of 1/8-inch mesh to the bottom of the roof sheathing at the opening for the vent.

Wildfire Protection Tips for Encanto Residents?
8/23/2022 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in San Diego.
When you have a fire damage emergency in Encanto, our San Diego City South West team typically arrives on site within four hours of your call for help. Summer is here, and dry vegetation can ignite and spread rapidly. The San Diego County website offers information on creating defensible space around your home to protect it from wildfire damage. Clearing combustible vegetation and planting fire-resistant plants can help minimize wildfire risk.
Combustible vegetation is any material including dry grass, brush, weeds, litter, and waste that can catch fire easily in its natural state.
Combustible vegetation can only be removed by mowing, cutting, and grazing as long as the root structure is left intact. Any trees you remove shall have the stumps cut no higher than 8 inches above the ground. The only exception would be an orchard, and orchard trees may have their stumps wholly removed. However, combustible vegetation can be replaced with fire-resistant plants.
Fire-resistant plants
- Grow close to the ground
- Have a low sap or resin content
- Grow without accumulating dead branches, needles, or leaves
- Are easily maintained and pruned
- Are drought-tolerant

Do you know that extension cords cause fires, injuries, and death when used improperly? Our San Diego City, South West team offers these extension cord safety tips from The Electrical Safety Foundation International (EFSI):
- Do not overload extension cords or allow them to run through water or snow on the ground
- Do not substitute extension cords for permanent wiring
- Do not run through walls, doorways, ceilings, or floors
- Do not use an extension cord for more than one appliance
- Multiple plug outlets must be plugged directly into mounted electrical receptacles; they cannot be chained together
- Make sure the extension cord or temporary power strip is rated for the products to be plugged in and is marked for either indoor or outdoor use
- Never use a cord that feels hot or is damaged in any way
- Never use three-prong plugs with outlets with only two slots for the plug. Do not cut off the ground pin to force a fit. Never force a plug into an outlet if it doesn’t fit.

Hoarding Fire in East Village Victorian?
6/14/2022 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in San Diego County.
Our San Diego City, South West team responds to fire damage emergencies every year in the East Village area. Our technicians are trained and certified by the Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to clean and restore homes damaged by fire. Hoarding is a condition where a person has difficulty discarding personal possessions. This accumulation of items can cause unsafe living conditions and place inhabitants at risk for fire. Here is some information about hoarding from the National Fire Protection Association:
Hoarding Increases Fire Risks
- Cooking is unsafe if flammable items are close to the stove or oven
- Heating units may be too close to things that can burn. They might also be placed on unstable surfaces. If a heater tips over into a pile, it can cause a fire.
- Electrical wiring may be old or worn from the weight of piles. Pests could chew on wires, and damaged wires can start fires.
- Open flames from smoking materials or candles in a home with excess clutter are very dangerous
- Blocked pathways and exits may hinder escape from a fire

Portable Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips for Logan Heights?
4/5/2022 (Permalink)
We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.
Our San Diego City, South West team responds to fire damage emergencies each year, and many start in the kitchen. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association for selecting and using a fire extinguisher:
- For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
- Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
- Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings.
- Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
- Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have a home fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.

Microwave Fire in Logan Heights?
1/11/2022 (Permalink)
We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in San Diego County.
SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has been restoring fire damage in the Logan Heights area of San Diego for many years. Microwave ovens are convenient and used by many to reheat and cook food, but improper use can cause fire damage. Here are some microwave oven safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:
- PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall on the product.
- PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet — never use an extension cord
- MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users
- OPEN food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
- FOOD heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
- NEVER heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns. Warm the baby bottle in a bowl of warm, not hot or boiling, water, or by running it under the tap.

Wildfire Preparedness for Logan Heights?
4/6/2021 (Permalink)
We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.
Wildfire Season is Coming
SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW wants Logan Heights residents to be ready for this year’s wildfire season. Here are some tips for maintaining defensible space around your home from San Diego County’s website:
- You may plant fire-resistant, irrigated landscaping in the first 50 feet of the 100 feet from your structure. These plants need to be maintained all year around.
- You need to keep natural vegetation in the remaining 50 feet of the 100-foot space. This would be the area furthest away from your structure. The plants need to be thinned and cut back to no more than 6 inches above the ground.
- Do not completely remove all vegetation which would leave the ground bare. Some vegetation is necessary to prevent erosion.
- Do not remove or disturb the existing plant root system to prevent any future erosion.
- Remove dead and dying vegetation.
- Trim trees that overhang or touch your structures.
- Properly irrigating plants will help prevent plants from igniting. Wildfires rarely occur until after June, because as little as 1 inch of water per month keeps drought-adapted plants from readily burning.
- Trees and shrubs can be maintained by deep watering at least once a month for drought-tolerant species and once a week for high water requiring plants.

We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego!
Light Bulb Epiphany
Have you ever seen a scarf draped over a lampshade to dim the light in a room? My roommate did this one time when she had a headache. Her headache was even worse when the scarf caught on fire from the hot light bulb in the lamp! Yikes!
SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW responds to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in the Gas Lamp Quarter. Here are some light and electrical safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):
- Be sure that the bulbs in your lights match what is safe for the lamp. There should be a sticker that indicates the maximum wattage for the light bulb — such as use a maximum of a 60-watt bulb.
- Light bulbs in the living area of your home, including closets, should have a shade or globe for protection. Light bulbs can get very hot and cause a fire if something that can burn is too close.
- Inspect your home for hidden electrical hazards.
- Check electrical cords to make sure the wires are not damaged, cracked, or loose. Replace them or have them professionally repaired if necessary.
For more information on electrical safety, you can download the Electrical Safety Checklist from the NFPA website.

California Fire Statistics
In 2020, the United States Forest Service and CALFIRE reported 9639 fires that burned 4,257,059 acres in the state between January 1 and December 13. Lightning strikes, high winds, and accidental fires all contributed to the devastating fire season. In southern California, the Santa Ana winds blow through the fall and winter months, bringing dry, warm air from the desert that dries out vegetation and helps fires spread. Burning embers from an outside firepit reached the house in this picture and burnt off part of the roof. Fortunately, the house in this picture was able to be restored to pre-fire condition!

Ever wonder how Dalmatians become associated with fire departments?
When we don’t need fire fighters to rescue us, we like to imagine their Dalmatian dogs jumping onto the engines, wagging their tails, and showing off their spots. How did these dogs become associated with firefighting?
Anyone who has had Dalmatians (or seen that movie) knows these dogs are fast, energetic, and beautiful. Back in Europe in the 1700s, wealthy people had Dalmatians run alongside their horse-drawn coaches to keep the paths clear.
When towns and cities started organizing fire departments, the fire fighters used Dalmatians for the same reason, and also to keep the horses calm near the fire. As a side benefit, the Dalmatians kept the fire stations free of rats.
Dalmatians were perfect dogs for the fire-fighting companies. They were – and are -- energetic, loyal, and have endurance. Some departments still keep Dalmatians as mascots. Not even Dalmatians can keep up with engine-powered vehicles, so any fire departments that keep a Dalmatian do so for the company, and perhaps the “gosh, that’s a cute dog” factor.

We are fire damage restoration specialists in San Diego City.
Fire Season in San Diego
The backyard in this picture is a fire waiting to happen. Once vegetation dies, like the dead grasses in this picture, they become easy fuel for any wayward spark or ember. Dry weather combined with combustible organic materials like fallen leaves, dead grasses, and even outdoor patio furniture cushions can be great fuel for fires. You can protect your home from fire damage by creating defensible space around your structures. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has seen the destruction that fire can cause to property and offers these tips for creating a defensible space around your property from the County of San Diego and the National Fire Protection Association:
- Clear combustible vegetation in a 100-foot radius from any structure
- Replace mulch with noncombustible mulch products like rock
- Keep rain gutters free of debris and use metal rain gutters
- Implement a maintenance strategy to keep the zone clear of dead plant materials

Learning about dry sponges used on fire jobs

This is a photo from a fire damage job that SERVPRO recently assisted with cleanup for. Call us 24/7/365 at 619-269-5004.
When you have a fire, whether you think it is large or small, soot needs to be cleaned properly. Soot from fire damage cannot be cleaned with just water.
SERVPRO uses a special dry sponge on surfaces such as drywall. It is made of rubber and can be used almost like an eraser.
The dry sponges we use on our fire jobs are incredibly porous and hold a large amount of soot. Once the surface of the dry sponge is dirty, it has to be thrown away and must never be cleaned or reused.
If you have a fire at your San Diego property, leave it to the experts. There truly is no substitute for training and experience. We are an IICRC certified firm and have the fire and water restoration expertise. SERVPRO is the brand you know and trust to help restore your property "Like it never even happened."

Top Tips for Avoiding An Electrical Fire
9/18/2019 (Permalink)
This photo illustrates what happens after a fire ravages a San Diego commercial warehouse.
One of the main causes of fires in homes and businesses is due to incorrectly installed wiring, often DIY wiring at home. They also happen due to overloaded circuits, and misuse of extension cords. It's important to have any electrical work done in your home by a licensed electrician / electrical contractor, but here are some tips you can take action on now.
Extension Cords
Extension cords are a common cause of electrical house fires. It's also preventable. To avoid electrical fires from extension cords, make sure that the capacity of the extension cord matches that of the appliance you are using. And don't use old extension cords with exposed wiring.
Wiring Issues
If you think you may have an electrical wiring issue, ADDRESS IT RIGHT AWAY. It's a good idea to have a licensed electrician check your home's wiring to be sure things look good.

Fire Cleanup Crew in La Mesa, San Diego, California

A photo of the initial board up at this residential property in the La Mesa area of San Diego County.
When your property is facing smoke or fire damage, and potentially water damage when a fire was extinguished, call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW at 619-269-5004 like this La Mesa homeowner did.
At this property in San Diego, there was an exterior fire on an enclosed patio in the front of home, and thankfully the fire was contained quickly by the homeowner's gardener who happened to be working in the backyard and saw smoke coming from the front of the home. By the time the fire department arrived onsite, the fire had already been extinguished with a garden hose.
Because the window in the enclosed patio cracked during the fire, smoke went billowing throughout the interior of the home, and while there was no structural damage, there was smoke, soot, and water damage inside the property. That's where our team of experts came in to assist the homeowner, who raved and raved about our entire team's professionalism, kindness, and level of service.

Kitchen Fire Cleanup in Point Loma/Sunset Cliffs
5/29/2018 (Permalink)
Fire damage at a residence in Point Loma/Sunset Cliffs.
When SERVPRO of San Diego City SW got the call for a "small kitchen fire" in the Point Loma/Sunset Cliffs neighborhood of San Diego, originally the homeowner thought it would be a very small job and possibly just equipment rental from us. This was because the fire was contained quickly, and it was relatively small in what it actually burned. It actually originated from a faulty dishwasher electrical connection.
When our owner, Ben, arrived onsite to walk the job with the tenants, dialing in to the owner via phone, he explained to them that not only was this pretty significant fire / smoke / soot damage (the smoke and soot was in the central HVAC system, and when the odor gets in an HVAC system, it must be properly cleaned, so as not to disperse the particles once the system is turned on). There was also significant water damage to the downstairs, when the firefighters extinguished the fire in the kitchen. And thank goodness for that, as no one was injured thanks to the great work of the San Diego Firefighters.
It was thanks to Ben's honesty and communication, and him educating the tenants and owners on the true scope of the work, that we were selected to do the fire and water cleanup for them. They were so happy with our crews that we received all 10/10s on our customer satisfaction form!

3 things to ask restoration companies in San Diego
4/3/2018 (Permalink)
A photo from a devastating fire in the San Diego area that our team was called in to assist with. Choose a fire cleanup provider that you can trust.
Research shows that the majority of consumers, both residential and commercial, find vendors by doing internet searches. The internet is a powerful tool for finding resources, especially in emergency situations. Here are a few tips for choosing an emergency water damage or fire cleanup service provider in greater San Diego.
1.) Make sure they have necessary licensure and certifications.
Anyone can claim to safely handle your emergency water situations, mold remediation, or fire cleanup, but ask them these questions. Are you licensed? Are you bonded? Are you insured? What are your certifications? SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is fully licensed, bonded, insured and we have all of the necessary industry certifications so that you know your home or business is in safe and skilled hands when you call us.
2.) What kind of equipment and products do you use?
If you hear the word "bleach", RUN! SERVPRO of San Diego City SW uses all of the latest state of the art equipment, as well as "safe" cleaning and deodorizing products. Some mold remediation companies in San Diego are using bleach to treat mold, which is absolutely haphazard and not in your best interests.
3.) Will you bill my insurance?
Some restoration companies in San Diego refuse to bill your insurance and work with your insurance carrier to come to an agreed cost. With SERVPRO of San Diego City SW that is never the case. We work directly with your insurance company and your insurance adjuster, and when a loss is covered, we'll always agree on a cost and scope with them, so you aren't left paying a bill that is double what your insurance has agreed to pay. We pride ourselves on strong relationships with insurance carriers and insurance adjusters in San Diego, and we are known for doing the right thing and making the customer (YOU) happy. If you have any emergency water damage, fire smoke and soot cleanup, or mold remediation needs in San Diego, call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 619-269-5004.
SERVPRO of San Diego City SW team & fire cleanup efforts

Our team spent over a month doing commercial and large residential smoke and soot damage cleanup.
One of the properties we helped get back into business was a commercial retail center that included restaurants, shops, candy stores, etc. The entire property consisted of approximately 100,000 sq. feet of retail space. If you have extensive commercial (or residential) smoke and soot damage and require cleaning services in San Diego, call us 24/7 at 619-269-5004. Our team would be happy to hold your hand through the entire process.
Tips for Fire Damage Restoration

Smoke and Soot Damage in San Diego
Tips for Fire Damage Restoration
Fire in business or fire in home causes a lot of devastation to a property. Fire damage restoration is difficult and nearly impossible to tackle alone. This is where the assistance of commercial fire damage restoration experts like SERVPRO of San Diego City SW may be necessary to deal with the fire loss. Before experts arrive to manage the fire loss in business buildings or at home, those affected can do a few things to do some fire cleanup themselves. The following tips will assist one in preventing further fire damage before help from experts arrives.
Improving Air Quality of the Room
Where there is fire, there is smoke. Smoke damage and soot damage are two of the expected outcomes of commercial fire damage. Smoke affects the air quality of the room after the fire damage and should be dealt with properly. It should be properly cleaned, but until help arrives you can open doors and windows and that will help improve air quality, as well as protect those doing the fire cleanup.
Cleanup of Smoke Damage on the Wall
When an outbreak of fire in a home or fire in a business building occurs, there will be smoke damage to the walls, wallpaper, paint, and other surfaces. Employees or residents can use detergents to clean the regions where there was not too much smoke damage. Smoke will cause soot damage, so they should try to dust the greasy soot off from the surface first before scrubbing it clean during fire cleanup.
Getting Rid of Mold and Getting Rid of Mildew
In most cases, fires are extinguished using water, depending on the cause. Mold and mildew that result from water being used to put out the fire do need special attention. In cases like this, it's best to let commercial fire damage cleanup experts handle the mold and mildew, because of serious health issues that can be caused by exposure to mold. Also, commercial fire cleanup experts knows the best fire cleanup techniques and procedures to prevent contamination of clothing, carpets, furniture, walls, and vents.
Cleaning of Flooring/Carpet
When putting out a fire, the carpets, furniture, and floors will absorb most of the water. The individuals doing fire damage restoration should pull up any carpets and remove furniture which have water damage and replace or repair them. The floors need to be dried or replaced if the water seeps underneath. Commercial fire damage restoration professionals can come and help you to do the drying with their equipment.
The best thing one can do is familiarize themselves with the above information. This will help deal with fire damage restoration in San Diego when there is an outbreak of a fire in a business or fire in a home. This will help recover from a fire loss sooner rather than later. Contacting commercial fire damage restoration experts is the best first-step!

Very few of us spend time thinking about residential house fires in San Diego. It's not something you ever think will happen to you, and we hope it doesn't! Here are a few tips though to help you keep your home as safe as possible and free from the risk of fire.
Top Cause of House Fires? Faulty Wiring and Outlets
-Check the electrical cords throughout your home for signs of fraying and replace all frayed wires
-Do not pinch or cover electical cords with items such as rugs
-Be aware of the capacity of your home's electrical system! Do not overload your circuits. If in doubt, consult a licensed electrician
-Understand the difference between surge protectors and power strips. Both allow you to plug in multiple electronic devices, but only the surge protector will help protect these devices from a power spike. Use surge protectors to protect valuable electronic devices, such as computers and televisions.
