Heavy Rain Causes Water Intrusion Damage in Encanto Home?

11/12/2024 (Permalink)

Raindrops cover a window during a storm. We restore storm damage 24/7 in San Diego.

Our San Diego City, South West team is a leader in storm damage restoration services. Heavy rains have been known to cause significant property damage in Encanto, so taking some steps to prepare for inclement weather may help prevent or minimize property damage from stormwater intrusion.

Start by inspecting your roof for missing or damaged shingles and repairing them to prevent leaks. Cleaning rain gutters and downspouts will prevent water from backing overflowing onto the roof and seeping into your home. Be sure that downspouts are directed away from the foundation to prevent water pooling around the base of your home.

Additionally, sealing cracks in your foundation or walls can stop water from entering vulnerable areas. Check that windows and doors are properly sealed, and consider adding weather stripping for additional protection.

Regular maintenance of your landscaping is another essential step. By ensuring that the grading around your home slopes away from the foundation, you're taking a proactive step to prevent water from seeping in. Taking these precautions before the storm can save you from the headache and expense of water intrusion.

Preventing Water Damage from Clogged Pipes in East Village?

11/5/2024 (Permalink)

A clogged sink is shown. We are water damage restoration leaders in San Diego!

Clogged pipes are a common cause of water damage in East Village, often leading to leaks, slow drains, or even burst pipes. When pipes become clogged with debris, such as hair, soap scum, grease, or foreign objects, water flow is restricted, causing pressure to build up inside the pipes. Over time, this pressure can lead to leaks or breaks that cause significant water damage.

Our San Diego City, South West team restores water damage from clogged pipes often. Regular maintenance and mindful habits can help prevent clogs and protect your home. Avoid pouring grease or food scraps down the kitchen drain, and use drain strainers in sinks, showers, and tubs to catch hair and other debris. Routine cleaning of your drains can also prevent buildup that could lead to clogs.

If you notice signs of a clog, such as slow draining or gurgling noises, address the issue promptly before it escalates. Professionals can often remove stubborn clogs safely without damaging your pipes. By taking proactive measures to prevent and resolve clogs, you can protect your home from water damage caused by pipe blockages.

Urban Water Contamination: The Hidden Risk of Heavy Rains in San Diego?

10/22/2024 (Permalink)

Heavy rainfall causes flooding. We are storm damage restoration leaders in San Diego.

Our San Diego City, South West team has been restoring storm damage caused by heavy rains in San Diego for years. Heavy rains in urban areas are not just about flooding; they also bring a pressing issue of water contamination. This contamination, a result of rainwater mixing with pollutants like oil, chemicals, and waste, poses serious risks to both property and health. The urgency of this issue is heightened in densely populated areas, where contaminated runoff can quickly overwhelm drainage systems during heavy rain, leading to flooding that spreads these pollutants into homes and businesses.

Water contamination in urban areas can have far-reaching effects. It can damage the structural integrity of buildings, ruin personal belongings, and create hazardous living conditions. Contaminated water can also promote the growth of mold and bacteria, which can further degrade indoor air quality and require extensive remediation efforts.

Protecting your home from water contamination during heavy rains is not a matter of chance but a proactive effort. Ensure that drainage systems are well-maintained and that any potential sources of pollutants are properly managed. Consider installing barriers or flood defenses to minimize the risk of contaminated water entering your property. By taking these precautions, you can actively safeguard your home and health against the hidden dangers of urban water contamination.

Galvanized Pipes Causing Water Damage in Older San Diego Homes?

10/15/2024 (Permalink)

An old, rusty, galvanized pipe is shown. We restore water damage from broken pipes 24/7 in San Diego.

Our San Diego City, South West team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services. Galvanized pipes, once a popular choice for plumbing, are now a common source of water damage in older homes in San Diego.

Over time, these pipes can corrode and deteriorate, leading to leaks, reduced water pressure, and potential flooding. The zinc coating that once protected the pipes from rust eventually wears away, exposing the underlying steel to water and small leaks can quickly escalate, causing significant water damage to walls, ceilings, and floors. In some cases, the entire pipe system may need to be replaced, especially if multiple leaks or signs of corrosion are present.

Homeowners with galvanized pipes should be proactive in monitoring their plumbing system. Look for signs of rust-colored water, reduced water pressure, or unexplained wet spots in your home.

If you suspect your pipes are failing, it's crucial to consult with professionals to assess the situation and recommend the best course of action. Replacing galvanized pipes with more modern materials can prevent costly water damage and ensure the long-term safety of your home.

Gaslamp Quarter Businesses Rely On Us for Water Damage Emergencies?

San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter is seen at night. We are leaders in commercial water damage restoration services in San Diego!

Our local San Diego City, South West team's water damage mitigation and restoration services can make a significant difference, turning a potential disaster into a manageable situation. For years, Gaslamp  Quarter businesses have relied on us to respond to water damage emergencies.

Quick action in water damage mitigation is crucial for keeping a business operational and preventing extensive and costly repairs from secondary damage. When water damage occurs, time is of the essence. Immediate response helps minimize the impact and prevents the problem from escalating.

One of the primary benefits of fast mitigation is the prevention of mold growth. Mold can become visible in 24 to 48 hours of water exposure, requiring extensive remediation efforts. By addressing water damage swiftly, businesses can avoid the costly process of mold removal and ensure minimal disruption to employees and customers.

Additionally, fast mitigation helps preserve the building's structural integrity. Prolonged exposure to water can weaken walls, floors, and ceilings, leading to structural damage that is expensive and time-consuming to repair.

Operational continuity is another critical advantage. Water damage can disrupt business operations, leading to lost revenue and productivity. Fast mitigation minimizes downtime, allowing businesses to resume normal activities quickly.

East Village Residence Water Damage Caused by Neighbor’s Failed Water Heater?

8/13/2024 (Permalink)

A person holds a bucket to catch water dripping from the ceiling. We respond to water damage emergencies 24/7 in San Diego!

East Village residents and businesses trust our local San Diego City, South West team to restore water damage “Like it never even happened.” Water heaters are essential home appliances, but when they fail, the damage they can cause is extensive. One of the most common issues is a leaking tank, which can lead to water damage.

A leaking water heater can affect floors, walls, and personal belongings, resulting in costly repairs. A more severe problem is a ruptured tank, which can quickly release large amounts of water, causing extensive flooding. Routine maintenance and inspections can help detect early signs of leaks or corrosion, allowing for timely repairs or replacement.

Another significant risk is the sediment buildup, which can reduce efficiency, increasing the risk of overheating. Overheating can lead to pressure buildup, potentially causing the tank to explode.

To prevent these issues, it is important to regularly flush the tank to remove sediment and inspect the pressure relief valve to ensure it is functioning correctly. Additionally, installing a water heater leak detector can provide early warning of leaks, allowing homeowners to take action before significant damage occurs. By maintaining the water heater properly, homeowners can enjoy a reliable hot water supply and prevent potential damage to their homes.

San Diego Homeowners Take Preventative Measures to Reduce Heavy Rain Runoff?

6/11/2024 (Permalink)

Raindrops cover the ground during a heavy rain event. We restore rain damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team has responded to water damage emergencies from many heavy rain events in San Diego this year. Here are some effective methods to prevent runoff and mitigate potential damage:

  1. Install Gutters and Downspouts: Properly functioning gutters and downspouts are essential for directing rainwater away from your home's foundation. Ensure that gutters are clean and debris-free to prevent clogs and overflow, which can lead to water damage.
  2. Grade Your Property: Proper yard grading can help direct water away from your home and prevent pooling and runoff. Ensure the ground slopes away from your foundation to encourage water to flow away from your property.
  3. Create Contour Swales: Contour swales are shallow depressions dug along the contours of your property to collect and redirect runoff. You can effectively manage runoff and prevent erosion by strategically placing contour swales.
  4. Use Rain Barrels: Rain barrels capture and store rainwater from your roof, reducing the runoff that flows onto your property. The collected water can be used for watering plants or other non-potable purposes, reducing water consumption and runoff.

Top Choice for Emergency Water Damage Restoration Services in San Diego?

6/4/2024 (Permalink)

Water spreads onto the floor from a leaking washing machine. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team restores water damage in San Diego throughout the year. A washing machine is a household staple, simplifying the chore of laundry. However, this indispensable appliance can harbor a hidden danger: water damage. When a washing machine malfunctions, whether due to worn hoses, defective valves, or a faulty pump, it can unleash a torrent of water, wreaking havoc on your home in a short period.

The repercussions of a washing machine leak are far-reaching. Water seeping into flooring can cause warping and discoloration, while soaked walls and baseboards provide an ideal breeding ground for mold. Furthermore, if left unchecked, the excess moisture can compromise the structural integrity of your home, necessitating costly repairs.

Proactive maintenance is crucial to preventing such disasters. Regularly inspect hoses for signs of wear and replace them every few years, even if they appear intact. Additionally, be mindful of overloading the machine, as excessive weight can strain components and increase the risk of leaks.

By adopting these preventative measures and remaining vigilant for signs of trouble, you can safeguard your home against water damage from a malfunctioning washing machine.

Urban Flooding Damages Properties in East Village, San Diego?

5/28/2024 (Permalink)

A flooded street is closed to through traffic. We respond to flooding and storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

With all the rain San Diego County has received this winter and spring, urban flooding has been an issue and a threat to homes and businesses. Our local San Diego City, South West team is highly trained and certified to mitigate and restore properties damaged by flooding.

Urban flooding is a risk in East Village because the area is a densely populated downtown neighborhood near San Diego Bay. Like many urban areas, East Village is susceptible to flooding during heavy rainfall due to impervious surfaces, inadequate drainage systems, and rapid runoff from paved areas.

Rain can overwhelm drainage systems during intense storms, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas, streets, and intersections. Additionally, the area’s proximity to water bodies like San Diego Bay increases the risk of coastal flooding during storms and high tides, especially in areas with poor coastal defenses or insufficient drainage infrastructure.

Residents and businesses should be aware of the potential for urban flooding and take appropriate precautions, such as ensuring proper drainage around their properties, keeping storm drains clear of debris, and having emergency plans in place. Additionally, staying informed about weather forecasts and flood warnings issued by local authorities can help residents prepare for and respond effectively to flooding events.

Golden Hill Home Suffers Water Damage from Leaking Pipe?

5/21/2024 (Permalink)

An old, corroded pipe is shown. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to water damage emergencies day and night. Some of the leading causes of broken pipes in Golden Hill are corrosion, ground shifting, and soil movement.

Corrosion: Over time, pipes can corrode due to chemical reactions with the water supply or soil, especially in older homes with outdated plumbing systems. Corrosion weakens the pipes, making them more susceptible to leaks, eventually leading to pipe breakage. In regions like San Diego, where hard water is prevalent, mineral deposits can accelerate corrosion, exacerbating the problem.

Ground shifting and soil movement: Golden Hill is located in an area prone to seismic activity and soil movement. Ground shifting, earthquakes, or soil settling can put stress on underground pipes, causing them to crack, break, or become misaligned. Additionally, tree roots seeking moisture and nutrients can infiltrate underground pipes, leading to blockages, leaks, and eventual pipe damage

Heavy Rain Causes Water Intrusion Issues in San Diego Communities?

5/14/2024 (Permalink)

Raindrops cover a window during a downpour. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team has been restoring storm damage from heavy rains this season. Heavy rain can cause water intrusion into homes beyond the obvious scenarios like flooding or roof leaks. Here are some not-so-obvious examples of water intrusion that can happen during a heavy rain event:

Window Leaks: Improperly sealed windows or windows with damaged seals can allow rainwater to seep into the interior of buildings, especially during heavy or driving rain. This can lead to water damage to walls, floors, and furnishings.

Foundation Seepage: Intense or prolonged rainfall can saturate the soil around a building's foundation, leading to hydrostatic pressure against crawl space walls. Over time, this pressure can force water through cracks or gaps in the foundation, resulting in crawl space flooding.

Siding Penetration: Gaps or cracks in exterior siding, such as vinyl or wood siding, can allow rainwater to penetrate a building's walls. This can lead to moisture damage, rot, and mold growth within the wall cavities.

Doorway Seepage: Poorly sealed exterior doors or doors with worn weather stripping can allow rainwater to seep under the door and into the interior of the building. This is particularly common with sliding glass doors or doors not adequately aligned with their frames.

Household Appliances Damaged by Flooding in Encanto?

5/7/2024 (Permalink)

A house is surrounded by floodwaters. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day. When powerful storms caused flooding in Encanto neighborhoods, many household appliances were damaged.

Flooding can severely damage kitchen appliances due to water infiltration into their internal components. Appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, and microwaves are particularly vulnerable. When water enters these appliances:

Electrical Damage: Water can short-circuit electrical components, leading to malfunctions or complete appliance failure. This can pose a safety hazard and render the appliance inoperable.

Corrosion: Exposure to water can cause corrosion of metal parts within the appliance, including electrical wiring, circuit boards, and motors. Corrosion weakens structural integrity and can lead to further malfunctions over time.

Contamination: Floodwater may contain contaminants such as dirt, debris, chemicals, or sewage, which can infiltrate the appliance and compromise its sanitation. This can pose health risks if the appliance is improperly cleaned and sanitized after flooding.

Insulation Damage: Water can saturate insulation materials within appliances, such as thermal insulation in refrigerators or soundproofing in dishwashers. Saturated insulation loses its effectiveness and may need to be replaced to restore the appliance's functionality.

Overall, flooding can cause extensive and costly damage to kitchen appliances, requiring repair or replacement to restore normal function and ensure safety.

Rats Chew Through Pipes, Causing Water Damage in Logan Heights Home?

4/23/2024 (Permalink)

A rat sits on a pipe he has been gnawing on. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego!

Our local San Diego City, South West team restores water damage from broken pipes every year in Logan Heights. One cause of pipe failure relates to rodents chewing on pipes. Rats are notorious scavengers known for their relentless gnawing, which can severely threaten plumbing systems in homes and buildings. Their sharp teeth and persistent chewing behavior can lead to significant water damage when they target plumbing pipes.

Rats often seek out sources of water and shelter, making plumbing pipes an attractive target for their destructive tendencies. Whether out of necessity for hydration or maintaining their incisors, rats gnaw on plastic, PVC, or even metal pipes, causing punctures, cracks, or complete breaches in the pipe's integrity.

The consequences of rats chewing through plumbing pipes can be dire. Water leaks from damaged pipes can lead to mold growth, structural damage, and costly repairs. Additionally, water damage can compromise the safety and habitability of a home or building, posing health risks to occupants.

To prevent rats from wreaking havoc on plumbing systems, homeowners should take proactive measures such as sealing entry points, eliminating food sources, and regularly inspecting plumbing infrastructure. By addressing rat infestations promptly and safeguarding plumbing pipes against chewing damage, homeowners can avoid the headache of water damage and ensure the integrity of their plumbing systems.

Overloaded Washing Machine Leads to Water Damage Emergency in Sherman Heights Home?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A person has overloaded a washing machine. San Diegans trust us to restore water damage!

Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to water damage emergencies often in Sherman Heights. An overloaded or overused washing machine can pose a significant risk of water damage in a home due to several potential factors. When a washing machine is overloaded, it strains its internal components, such as bearings, seals, and hoses, increasing the likelihood of leaks or failures.

Additionally, overuse of a washing machine without allowing it to drain between cycles properly can result in water backing up or overflowing from the machine. This can occur if the drainage system becomes clogged with lint, debris, or soap residue, preventing water from exiting the machine efficiently.

Also, prolonged overuse of a washing machine can accelerate wear and tear on critical components, such as hoses and seals, increasing the likelihood of ruptures or leaks. Even minor leaks can lead to extensive water damage, including mold growth, structural deterioration, and costly repairs if left unchecked.

It is important to adhere to recommended load capacities, avoid overusing the machine, and perform regular maintenance to mitigate the risk of water damage associated with an overloaded or overused washing machine.

Regularly maintain gutters and downspouts: Keep gutters and downspouts clean and free of debris to prevent clogs that can lead to overflowing water.

Implement landscaping solutions: Use landscaping techniques like grading, swales, and permeable surfaces to direct rainwater away from the building and allow it to be absorbed by the ground.

Install barriers: Use flood barriers, sandbags, or other temporary measures to block entry points where water could seep into your business.

Rain Barrel Prevents Flooding in San Diego Backyard?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

A barrel quickly fills with rainwater during a downpour. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team restores storm damage every year in San Diego. Rain barrels are valuable tools for mitigating flooding during heavy rain events by helping to manage and control the excess water runoff. Here's how rain barrels contribute to flood prevention:

Rainwater Collection: Rain barrels capture and store rainwater that falls on rooftops. Instead of letting all the rainwater flow directly onto the ground and potentially overwhelm drainage systems, rain barrels collect and store it for later use.

Reduced Runoff: By collecting the rainwater from downspouts, rain barrels significantly reduce the volume of water that flows into storm drains and waterways during heavy rains. This decreased runoff helps prevent localized flooding in urban and suburban areas.

Slow Release: Rain barrels allow for the slow release of collected rainwater into the surrounding landscape. This gradual release minimizes the risk of sudden and excessive water accumulation, which can lead to flooding.

Soil Infiltration: The water collected in rain barrels can be used for various purposes, including watering gardens and lawns. When applied to the soil, this water helps with soil infiltration, allowing excess rainwater to be absorbed into the ground rather than contributing to surface runoff.

Erosion Prevention: By reducing the intensity of runoff, rain barrels help prevent soil erosion, especially on slopes and hilly terrain. This is crucial for maintaining stable landscapes during heavy rain events.

Aging Pipes Cause Water Damage in San Diego Homes?

1/23/2024 (Permalink)

An old water pipe clogged with rust is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team is a trusted leader in water damage restoration services. Homes in San Diego with older plumbing systems made of materials like galvanized steel or copper are at risk of experiencing corrosion and deterioration over time. These issues can lead to a range of problems, including pipe leaks and breaks.

Galvanized steel pipes were commonly used in older homes but have a limited lifespan. Over the years, the protective zinc coating on these pipes can corrode and wear away, leaving the underlying steel vulnerable to rust and deterioration. This corrosion not only weakens the pipes but can also reduce water quality as rust particles can enter the water supply.

While copper pipes are more resistant to rust, they are not entirely immune to corrosion. Copper can react with certain minerals or chemicals in the water, forming pinhole leaks or pitting on the pipe's inner surface. Over time, this corrosion can compromise the integrity of the copper pipes.

Heavy Rain Causes Water Damage to Sherman Heights Home?

1/16/2024 (Permalink)

A bucket sits in the middle of a living room to catch water dripping from a roof leak. We restore storm damage “Like it never even happened” in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team has helped a lot of families in Sherman Heights with water intrusion issues over the years. During heavy rain, water can enter a home and cause water damage issues. Here are some examples:

Roof Leaks: Damaged or poorly maintained roofs can allow rainwater to penetrate through gaps, missing shingles, or damaged flashing. Water then seeps into the attic and ceilings, causing stains, rot, and potential structural damage.

Clogged Gutters and Downspouts: Blocked gutters and downspouts prevent proper rainwater drainage from the roof. This can lead to overflow, and water may spill down the exterior walls, potentially seeping into the foundation.

Foundation Issues: Heavy rain can saturate the soil around a home's foundation. If the foundation has cracks or poor waterproofing, water can infiltrate through these openings, leading to crawl space moisture issues.

Poorly Sealed Windows and Doors: Older or improperly sealed windows and doors can allow rainwater to infiltrate around their frames. This can result in water pooling on interior sills and floors.

Flooding: In areas with inadequate drainage or heavy rainfall, flooding can occur, causing water to enter homes at ground level through doors, vents, and other openings.

Sewer Backup: Heavy rain can overwhelm the sewer system, leading to sewage backups.

The accumulation of debris, mineral deposits, grease, or foreign objects inside pipes can cause blockages and reduce water flow. Over time, this can lead to increased pressure within the pipes, potentially causing them to burst or leak. Common areas for blockages include kitchen sink drains, bathroom drains, and sewer lines. Regular maintenance and proper disposal of materials can help prevent clogs and blockages.

Regular inspections, maintenance, and addressing plumbing issues promptly can help prevent pipe failures and extend the lifespan of your home's plumbing system.

How Will I Know If My Water Damage in Golden Hill is Completely Dry?

10/3/2022 (Permalink)

A person uses a moisture meter. Our San Diego City, South West team, uses powerful equipment to restore water-damaged areas to normal moisture levels. Please read our latest blog to

Golden Hill residents and businesses need to know about our drying process!

Most of the surfaces in homes and businesses are porous, so when they are exposed to water, the water can seep into them. Although these surfaces may be dry to the touch, they may retain moisture, which, left untreated, can cause the materials to break down, warp, or cause mold damage.

Drying and Dehumidification Process

Our San Diego City, South West team uses room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the number of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the area. We also monitor and document the drying process to ensure the damage is dried thoroughly. Here is some additional information from our website about our drying process.

Monitor Floor and Walls

We check the moisture levels to monitor the drying process.

  • Monitor Floors
  • Monitor Walls

  • Industrial-grade dehumidifiers help prevent secondary water damage like swelling and warping floors, walls, and furniture
  • High-speed air movers create airflow across walls, carpets, pads, and furniture, accelerating moisture evaporation

Leaking Air Conditioner Causing Water Damage in Sherman Heights?

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

Water stains are visible on a ceiling. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in San Diego County!

Sherman Heights Locals Need to Know

Do you know that running your air conditioning system with the windows open can cause your air conditioning system to leak? I didn’t. One day I looked up and saw a large water spot on my ceiling; I couldn’t trace the leak to any plumbing issues and was stumped.

I called the local San Diego City South West team, and they discovered an overflowing drip pan caused the water leak. Yikes! Evidently, the air conditioner’s evaporator coil was clogged with dust and debris, causing the water in the condensation pan to overflow and leak onto the ceiling. The technicians fixed the air conditioning unit coil to prevent further damage. Once the area was completely dry, they replaced the drywall and insulation and repainted the ceiling. Now, you would never know I had water damage!

Exploding Water Heater in Logan Heights Home?

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

A corroded water heater anode rod is shown. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Water heater woes in Logan Heights.

Have you had your water heater inspected lately? Our San Diego City, South West team offers these tips regarding the professional maintenance for your water heater from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors:

Qualified service professionals only:

  • Burners should be cleaned yearly for gas and oil-fired water heaters. Have the service professional inspect flues and vents for cracks or loose connections that could leak deadly exhaust gases.

  • Have a qualified plumber replace your anode rod once every two to five years

  • The service life of a temperature and pressure (T & P) valve is usually three years. Even if a T & P valve looks fine from the outside, manufacturers recommend they be removed and visually inspected for accumulations of corrosion deposits
  • Call a qualified plumber if your water tank is leaking.
    • If the T & P valve is discharging water or steam, the ONLY safe intervention is to remove the heat source by cutting off its fuel, if you can. For an electric heater, trip the circuit breaker; for a gas heater, shut off the gas.
    • If your water heater overheats, call a qualified plumber and allow the water heater to cool naturally. Never try to relieve the pressure yourself. Never add cool water to the tank; never try to cool it by spraying it with a hose.

Happy Water Damage Customers in San Diego?

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

A water-damaged ceiling is shown. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in San Diego County.

Our San Diego City, South West team has been restoring water damage for many years. Here is a testimonial from our website from a water damage customer:

“So we have a rental unit on the 3rd floor of a condo building in Little Italy, and the washing machine water-level sensor switch failed... Yup, flooded half of our unit and the ceiling/walls of the unit downstairs. We called SERVPRO right away, oh, we had never used SERVPRO services before, but thankfully a few months ago, our neighbors had a bathroom tub overflow in their three-story home, and it flooded all the way to the garage. In talking with our neighbors about their experience and repairs they highly recommended SERVPRO if we ever needed such. Well, we did, and so we call SERVPRO... They were out there very quickly and sucked up all the water, even from the washing machine tub. They masked off the unaffected areas with plastic walls, took off the baseboards, cut out the wet drywall, and removed the wet carpet pad... They set up their blow dryers and let evaporation do the rest. Then they came back and inspected the walls/floors and not finding any remaining water they quickly restored the walls, carpet pad and baseboards, looks like new.” Mark in San Diego

A leaking pipe can be visible, or it may be hidden from view inside a wall or underneath a concrete slab. One way to tell if you have water damage is to look at your water bill. If you see a significant spike in water usage for no apparent reason, you may have a hidden water leak in your plumbing system. The Environmental Protection Agency suggests checking your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a water leak.

Other Common Causes of Water Damage

  • Severe Weather
  • Washing Machine Supply Line
  • Failed Dishwasher
  • Ice Machine Supply Line
  • Air Conditioning Condensation
  • Blocked Drains
  • Malfunctioning Sprinkler Systems
  • Leaking water Heater

Three Types of Contaminated Water in San Diego Homes?

5/4/2022 (Permalink)

A storm drain is clogged with debris. We are leaders in water cleanup and restoration services in San Diego County.

Our San Diego City, South West team is trained and certified to restore areas compromised by contaminated water by the Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the nonprofit certifying body for the cleaning and restoration industry. Here are the three classifications of water contamination we restore:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.

Category 2: "Gray Water"

  • It may contain bacteria and viruses
  • It can quickly degrade into category three if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category three water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Here is some more information about stormwater from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):

  • Stormwater pollution comes from materials washed into the drains
  • Stormwater pollution contains chemicals
  • Bacteria from pet waste
  • Sewage overflow
  • Fertilizers
  • Paint and construction debris

High Water Bill in East Village?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A closeup of a water meter is shown. San Diegans can count on us to restore water damage 24-hours a day!

Does your water bill seem higher than usual? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), minor water leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of water wasted in United States homes each year. Many water leaks are not visible, and even minor water leaks can cause significant damage to a home over time. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW uses advanced technology and techniques to locate and identify hidden water leaks in homes and businesses.

The EPA offers this helpful leak detection information:

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It’s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak.

A bathtub is filling with water. We respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego County.

Tub trouble in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Brain fog is a real thing. I came home and ran the bathtub. My mom called and totally forgot about the bath running until I heard the sound of water cascading down the stairs. There was water everywhere, and I knew I had to act fast. My neighbor told me to call SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW. The technicians arrived quickly and began the water removal process almost immediately.

They extracted the water by using powerful industrial strength wet/dry vacuums. This fast water removal process reduced the drying time and helped prevent secondary water damage, mold, and bacterial growth. They inspected the carpet and pad to determine if they should be removed to protect the subfloor. Because the water was extracted so quickly, they did not have to remove my carpet or pad. They used moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters to measure the extent of moisture saturation and used an infrared camera to ensure there was no water behind walls and ceilings. Finally, they monitored and documented the drying process to ensure the areas were returned to normal moisture levels. Thank you, SERVPRO!

Sewage Back-up in the Marina District?

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

A person is rinsing cooking grease down the drain. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration in San Diego.

SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year in the Marina District and offer these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing sewer backups in your sewer lateral and in the city main:

  • Properly dispose of grease

Cooking oil should be poured into a heat-resistant container and disposed of properly after it cools off, not in the drain. Washing grease down the drain with hot water is unsatisfactory. As the grease cools off, it will solidify either in the drain, the property owner's line, or in the main sewer causing the line to constrict and eventually clog.

  • Properly dispose of paper products

Paper towels, disposable (and cloth) diapers, hygienic wipes and feminine products do not deteriorate quickly and can cause a great deal of trouble in the property owner's lateral as well as in the city main.

  • Periodically cut tree roots

If you have continuing problems with tree roots in your lateral, you may have to regularly have the roots cut by a professional.

  • Replace your line with new plastic pipe

Plastic pipe will prevent tree roots from entering your line is to replace your line and tap with new plastic pipe.

  • Install a backwater prevention valve to prevent sewer backflows.

  • Turn off valves when not in use.
  • Consider installing a lever-type valve that is easy to operate between uses.

Water Damage Prevention in San Diego?

1/5/2021 (Permalink)

A water barrel is shown catching rainwater coming out of a downspout. Our technicians are on call 24 hours a day to respond to water damage emergencies in San Diego.

Rain Runoff Tip

Water damage is one of the costliest repairs, and on average, a home water damage claim in the United States runs about $6965 per claim. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers tips and ideas on preventing water damage from happening. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has been responding to water damage emergencies in the San Diego area for years and knows that the sooner the water damage is mitigated, the lower the cost of the repair. Water is invasive and will find its way into a structure if it does not drain away from the home.

One tip from FEMA is to install a rain barrel as a way of channeling the rainwater. Rain barrels are relatively inexpensive and can be connected to downspouts, or the downspout can sit above the rain barrel to catch the water runoff from roofs. The water can be used to water the lawn and outdoor plants!

Water is turned on and is spraying water into a shower stall. Water damage restoration is one of our specialties in San Diego.

Showered by water damage?

According to a study published by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, 37 percent of homes that were over 20 years old were more likely to have water damage attributed to a shower, and over half of the water damage incidents involved a faulty shower pan. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW repairs water damage in bathrooms often in Logan Heights and has a team of water damage restoration technicians on call 24 hours a day to mitigate water damage emergencies of all kinds and sizes. Here are some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety:

  • Inspect tile and grout every 6 months, paying attention to loose or cracked tiles and cracked or crumbling grout lines and repair as needed.
  • Test the shower pan annually by blocking the floor drain and filling the shower stall with approximately 1 inch of water. Use a pencil to mark the water line and leave the water standing in the shower pan for 8 hours. If the water level decreases, you know you have a leaking shower pan.

Clogged Rain Gutter in Logan Heights?

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

A person is shown cleaning debris out of a clogged rain gutter. We are water damage specialists in San Diego.

A Little Prevention. . .

Have you inspected your rain gutters lately? Rain is expected to fall in San Diego County, and Logan Heights residents can take extra steps now to prevent water damage from seeping into your home from clogged rain gutters! When rain gutters get clogged and water cannot drain through them properly, they overflow and saturate the ground beneath them. This can cause pools of water to form that will penetrate and seep into any cracks in the concrete of your home’s foundation, which can cause structural damage, in some cases, making the house shift under its weight.

Clogged rain gutters can cause:

  • Roof leaks
  • Damage to Siding
  • Gutter damage
  • Foundation Damage
  • Landscape Damage

Water damage

SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW is a powerhouse of expertise when it comes to repairing water damage, but we’re still impressed by the amount of damage even a little bit of water can do.

When equipment failure turns an office into a water park or water from a broken pipe warps a kitchen floor, call us at 619-269-5004. We offer 24-hour emergency service, every day with no exceptions.

It could be worse

While no one at SERVPRO of San Diego City SW understands why misery is supposed to make anyone feel better; someone’s parents always insist it is true. In that spirit, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW brings…

Epic Water damage

We’ve mentioned it before, and we’ll mention it again: The Grand Canyon. Leave the water running for a couple of billion years and look what happens. It’s spectacular. It’s a relief no one wants to undo the erosion.

The Wave (in Arizona) is a stunning rock formation caused by rain, other runoff, and wind. If water damage could sculpt this kind of beauty out of San Diego buildings, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW might have to get into the business of destruction and out of the business of restoration.

The deceptively named Bryce Canyon in Utah is not a canyon. It is a series of tall structures formed by eons of water erosion. The views are gorgeous, but the lack of flat surfaces makes it difficult to house a family or build a business.

When the water damage isn’t geological…

Sewage Leak Gone to the Dogs in the Gaslamp Quarter?

10/13/2020 (Permalink)

A dog is shown wearing black-rimmed eyeglasses and is sitting on the toilet while reading the newspaper. Sewage leaks are nothing to bark about in San Diego.

Sewage Leaks Happen

You never know when a sewage leak might happen, and when it does, you need to get professional help. Water leaks fall into three types of contaminated water:

  • Category 1: “Clean Water”
  • Category 2: “Gray Water”
  • Category 3: “Black Water”

Sewage leaks fall into the “black water” category as the water is highly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or even death if ingested. According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), exposure to sewage wastewater can increase the chance for microbial exposure that can compromise your health. Fortunately, SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has been serving the San Diego community for years and has mitigated sewage spills of all kinds, both residential and commercial.

Sewage backups must be considered as emergencies and should be dealt with as soon as possible. Our water restoration specialists are specialty trained and certified to clean and restore black water emergencies safely.

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW to the rescue for a water emergency

7/13/2020 (Permalink)

light-colored living room with a high level of water SERVPRO of San Diego City SW rescues homes and businesses from water damage

SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW teaches its technicians that a little bit of water can do just as much damage as a large amount of water. The main factor is time. The longer the water has contact with something, the worse the effects. Call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW after a water disaster as soon as possible at (619) 269-5004, and emergency technicians will be available all day, every day, no matter what the day. Emergencies require speedy responses, and SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is always Faster to any size disaster.

Water Classification

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW extracts all the water with pumps, specialized vacuums, dryers, and dehumidifiers. Cleaning and disinfection are the next steps. The types of cleaning and disinfection depend partially on the classification of water.

Clean (or White) Water

When it comes to water damage, “white water” does not mean a good place to take a kayak. This water does not have solid or liquid waste, soaps, detergents, or any pathogens. However, it still causes damage to building structures and home or business contents, but it does not contain anything that can cause illness to people.

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW still needs to extract the water; even distilled water causes damage. Standing water becomes contaminated quickly; within 24-48 hours, mold appears.

Gray Water

Despite the name, gray water may be any color, depending on where it came from. Gray water may contain soaps or detergents, flakes of human skin, or plant matter. Like clean water, it gets worse quickly.

Black Water

Don’t be fooled if the water doesn’t look black; it can still be in the most dangerous classification. Black water contains pathogens that cause diseases. Pathogens come from different sources, including sewage, fungi, and at times, viruses.

The San Diego city-scape and bay is shown as the sun is setting. Water damage can happen any time in San Diego.

Water Damage Comes With Many Restoration Challenges

There are a lot of things that require restoration when water damage happens to a home or a commercial property. Depending on the amount of damage caused, a water damage restoration project could include the removal and offsite storage of furniture and computer and other equipment, the cleaning and deodorization and restoration of water damaged furniture, and document and photograph drying and restoration.

The type of water involved in the damage also informs the direction a water damage repair will take. For instance, water contaminated by a sewage spill will need to be treated differently than water damage caused by a leaking faucet. The good news is that SERVPRO of San Diego City SW has the specialty training and state-of-the-art equipment to respond to any size and type of water damage emergency in Logan Heights.

Water Leaks Can Become Costly Repairs in San Diego City.

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

A beautiful, modern kitchen is shown with wide-plank hardwood floors in pristine condition. We provide water damage restoration services in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Hidden Water Leaks Cause Major Water Damage

Unbeknownst to me, the waterline connected to my water dispenser on my refrigerator had a small leak that was not apparent for months. Hidden underneath the refrigerator, the dispenser waterline had been leaking every time someone filled a water glass, causing the hardwood floors underneath the refrigerator to slowly absorb water that eventually permeated the subfloor, baseboards, and drywall in the back of the refrigerator. Because the leak had gone unnoticed for so long, major repairs were needed including replacing the hardwood floors on the first floor of my townhome. Fortunately, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW has the specialty training and state-of-the-art equipment to minimize repair time and repair costs for Gaslamp Quarter residents and commercial business owners. We can also help with the insurance process and paperwork related to the insurance claim.

Different categories of water damage

A photo of a man under a house. This photo is of SERVPRO Co-Owner, Jordan Katz, in a crawl space under a house moisture reading the space.
When you call SERVPRO asking for help with a water damage emergency, you'll probably have one of our office assistants ask you if you know what caused the water damage.  One of the reasons why is it's important for us to have as many details as possible, so our crews know what equipment to bring and how to handle the damage. For example, did you know there are different categories of water?  Most people only know of one.

The first.  Category 1 water is "clean" water, and is like fresh water from a supply line, for example. The second category, grey water, consists of water from dishwashers, washing
machines. The last category, commonly referred to as black water (Category 3), is the most dangerous. You can become seriously ill if you ingest this category of water. It consists
of raw sewage and pesticides. Black water consists of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. It is
imperative that you contact professionals to handle this kind of water.  We have the
proper protective equipment, training, and experience needed to safely disinfect, and treat
the affected area.

SERVPRO San Diego SW is here to help you with all your water remediation and
restoration needs! We are water restoration experts. We are here 24/7/365 at (619) 269-5004. We are a preferred vendor for most insurance companies and our firm is IICRC Certified.

I had a dishwasher leak, what do I do?

A photo of equipment in a home. This photo shows us detecting moisture in a kitchen after a suspected dishwasher leak. Call SERVPRO 24/7/365 at 619-269-5004.

Our dishwashers are an appliance we depend on every single day.  They simplify our lives and they are something most families in San Diego use day in and day out. But like most appliances, they need a little bit of TLC to continue to function properly.

It all starts with dishwasher installation. If your dishwasher is not installed correctly, this is where major issues can begin.  And sometimes, due to the way the dishwasher is installed, you may not know a slow leak is occurring.

If your appliance hose cracks or loosens, hundreds of gallons of water can be seeping into your floors and walls.  If this happens, call SERVPRO in San Diego.  Our certified technicians are on-call 24/7/365 to extract water for you, place drying equipment, and walk you through the entire process.

At SERVPRO of San Diego City SW, we are always here to help.  Call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 619-269-5004.

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage from a second story tore through this ceiling at a business in San Diego.

If you suspect or know you have water damage at your San Diego business or residence, depending on the amount of damage, you may find yourself filing a claim with your homeowner's insurance provider.

You can hire whoever you want to help you with the water damage cleanup. Your insurance carrier will have a preferred vendor, and most of the time that is us, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW, but you do reserve the right to hire whomever you wish to help you with your water damage cleanup. 2. When you call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW:We arrive onsite and will assess and stabilize the situation. This means if there is standing water, we will remove it by using our water extraction tools. We will then contact your insurance company to confirm scope before doing any invasive acts such as demolition of wet drywall, this way we ensure there are proper approvals in place, or if there isn't, we can let you know what type of work you're looking at. 3. We bill your insurance direct:We're not like those other guys that refuse to work with your insurance company and will hand you over our bill and demand you pay up. We will bill your insurance directly and agree on cost with them, that way you aren't left paying thousands of dollars out of pocket that your insurance company is refusing to pay.  If you need water damage cleanup services anywhere in San Diego, call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW 24/7 at 619-269-5004. Sewage Backup Cleanup in San Diego

2/20/2018 (Permalink)

A photo of a bathroom that had a sewage backup in the downtown area of San Diego.

It's not pleasant having to deal with a sewage backup. We often get calls from San Diego homeowners or renters that need help with cleaning up their home or place of business after a sewage backup occurs.

Three common causes of sewage backups are: A ClogJust like drain pipes, main sewer lines can become clogged, which can cause sewage backups in your home. If it's just one toilet, sink or tub that seems to be giving you trouble, it could just be a clog in that drain. However, if a flush creates a sewage backup in your home, you probably have a blockage in your main sewer line. A few tips to try and prevent clogs are: 1. Do not use your toilet as a waste basket! Flush only toilet paper down your toilet.2. Avoid dumping large quantities of anything down your garbage disposal. Use the trash bin instead.3. Do not pour grease down your drain. Grease and fat, even when liquid, can harden your plumbing, collecting debris and creating a fierce clog. Tree RootsAnother common cause of home sewer backups is tree roots. Even if the area directly above your sewer line is free of trees, roots from a neighboring yard could be the cause of your sewage backup problem.Collapsed and/or broken sewer linesIf you San Diego home or property, your sewage backup could be caused by broken, cracked, or collapsed lines. Plastic sewer lines have become the norm now, but most older homes were built using cast iron and clay piping that can break down over time. If you are dealing with a sewage backup in San Diego, call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW 24/7 at 619-269-5004. Our trained team of professionals can get your home clean and back in shape "Like it never even happened."

Thank you to Annie for this wonderful 5-star review she left SERVPRO of San Diego City SW on Yelp last year.

"I absolutely love these guys. My house was flooded during one of San Diego's epic 3-inch rain storms (seriously...has the city heard of drainage??). I called a several companies when it happened, but SERVPRO of San Diego City SW were the only ones able to immediately send out a crew to assess the damage, suck out the water, set up machines, etc. etc. They worked closely with my insurance to get everything sorted - and everyone knows what a pain insurance companies can be. They were the MOST professional company and so great to work with. They went above and beyond in all my millions of requests (and I can definitely be picky). They're super communicative and truly listened to me. I worked closely with Ben & Jordan and can't say enough about how fantastic my experience was with them. I even recommended them to a friend who is a property manager and he has used them several times since then. He also has nothing but positive things to say about every interaction he has had with them. Thank you guys so much!!"
