Sandbags Prevent Water Intrusion During Deluge in Logan Heights Neighborhood?

11/19/2024 (Permalink)

Sandbags are strategically placed to prevent water intrusion in low lying areas. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24/7 in San Diego.

Our San Diego City, South West team is a storm damage restoration leader in Logan Heights. Sandbags are a simple and effective way to prevent water intrusion during rainstorms in Southern California. Heavy rains can cause flooding around homes. By strategically placing sandbags around vulnerable areas such as doorways, garages, and low-lying sections of your home, you can create a barrier that helps keep water out.

Start by overlapping the sandbags in a staggered pattern to ensure no gaps. Be sure to lay them flat and tightly packed together to form a solid wall. When creating your sandbag barrier, remember to leave enough space for access points like doors, but keep the barrier close enough to prevent water from seeping in.

If you live in an area prone to heavy rains, having sandbags prepared and ready to go before the storm hits is a good idea. You can usually find sandbag stations at local fire departments or city yards during the rainy season. Proper use of sandbags can significantly reduce the risk of water intrusion and the associated property damage.

Santa Ana Winds: A Force That Can Damage Your Home in Logan Heights?

10/29/2024 (Permalink)

A windy sky is shown. We are trained and certified to restore wind damage in San Diego.

Every year, our San Diego City, South West team restores property damage caused by the Santa Ana winds in Logan Heights. Santa Ana Winds, common in Southern California, are notorious for causing significant residential property damage.

These hot, dry winds can reach up to 70 mph, leading to destruction around homes. Santa Ana Winds are particularly dangerous because they often fuel wildfires, but they can cause plenty of damage even without fire.

High winds can knock over trees, which may fall on roofs, cars, or power lines. They can also lift loose roofing shingles, damage fences, and send debris flying through windows.

Strong gusts can dislodge outdoor furniture, blow down patio covers, and damage siding. If not properly secured, even small outdoor items can become dangerous projectiles.

Homeowners in areas affected by Santa Ana Winds should take precautions by trimming tree branches, securing loose items outside, and inspecting the roof regularly for any vulnerabilities.

Keeping the yard clear of debris can also help prevent wind-borne damage. Preparing in advance can save thousands of dollars in repairs and protect your home from the unpredictable force of these winds.

Cloud Formations: Early Indicators of Windstorms in Golden Hill?

9/10/2024 (Permalink)

Lenticular clouds are seen in the sky. We mitigate wind damage 24/7 in San Diego!

Our local San Diego City, South West team is trained and certified to restore wind damage in Golden Hill. In late summer, powerful winds are often associated with specific cloud types indicative of unstable weather conditions. Here are the types of clouds to watch for:

  1. Cumulonimbus Clouds: These towering, dense clouds are a significant harbinger of powerful winds, including gusty winds and even downbursts. Cumulonimbus clouds are associated with thunderstorms and can produce severe weather, including strong, damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, and lightning.
  2. Lenticular Clouds: While less common, these lens-shaped clouds can form over mountains and indicate strong winds aloft. In San Diego, lenticular clouds, especially over the coastal and inland mountains, can signal the approach of strong winds, including Santa Ana winds.
  3. Altostratus Clouds: These mid-level, gray, or blue-gray clouds can cover the sky and precede storms with continuous precipitation. Their presence can indicate an approaching weather front that may bring strong winds and stormy conditions.
  4. Stratocumulus Clouds: These low, lumpy clouds can sometimes form in advance of frontal systems and are associated with increasing wind speeds. If they are part of a larger weather system, they can signal the potential for strong winds.

Monitoring these cloud formations can provide early warning signs of potential windstorms and the need for property protection measures.

Advances in Wind-Resistant Building Materials in San Diego?

8/20/2024 (Permalink)

A wind-resistant metal roof is installed on a new home. We restore storm damage 24/7 in San Diego!

Our local San Diego City, South West team is a leader in storm damage restoration services in San Diego County. In recent years, new advancements in wind-resistant building materials have increased the ability of residential structures to withstand high-wind events. Impact-resistant windows and doors are notable innovations. These products are designed with multiple layers of glass and a durable interlayer that prevents shattering, protecting homes from flying debris and pressure changes caused by strong winds.

Another advancement is the use of reinforced roofing materials. Modern roofing systems often incorporate high-performance shingles, metal panels, or tiles specifically engineered to resist uplift forces. Additionally, roofing fasteners and adhesives have been improved to provide a stronger bond, ensuring that the roof remains intact during severe windstorms.

Engineered wood products, such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and cross-laminated timber (CLT), are also gaining popularity. These materials offer superior strength and flexibility compared to traditional wood, making them more resistant to wind-induced stresses. Also, advancements in structural connectors have improved the overall resilience of buildings by securely anchoring roofs and walls to the foundation.

Finally, wind-resistant design principles, such as aerodynamic building shapes and the strategic placement of openings, help reduce wind pressure on structures.

Comprehensive Assessment Process for Wind Damage in San Diego?

7/9/2024 (Permalink)

A palm tree is blown over during a powerful wind gust. We restore storm damage 24/7 in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team is trained and certified to restore wind damage. When you contact us with a property damage emergency caused by winds, we will send a team out to immediately assess the damage and board and tarp up any exposed areas of the structure to prevent secondary damage.

Assessment Process and Report

Assessing wind damage is crucial to identifying all affected areas and ensuring the property is safely and effectively restored. We will conduct a thorough walkthrough of the property, both inside and outside, to identify visible signs of wind damage. This includes examining the roof, siding, windows, doors, and other structural elements.

After the inspection, the inspector will prepare a report outlining the findings. This report will detail the damage, recommend necessary repairs, and may include cost estimates for restoration.

Insurance Coordination

If the assessment is for an insurance claim, we can assist in coordinating with your insurance provider, ensuring that all necessary documentation is submitted for the claim process.

Repair Plan

Based on the assessment, a detailed repair plan outlines the steps required to restore the property to its pre-damage condition. This plan will prioritize urgent repairs to prevent further damage.

Muddy floodwaters are shown. We mitigate storm damage 24 hours a day in San Diego!

Our local San Diego City, South West team has been busy this year restoring water damage in San Diego County. Lightning Safety Tips For San Diego County Residents?

1/9/2024 (Permalink)

Lightning strikes a residential neighborhood. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Do you know that standing next to a window when lightning is visible outside increases your chances of being struck by lightning? It’s true! Lightning can strike inside a house when it follows paths that conduct electricity, such as electrical wiring, plumbing, or metal pipes, into the home. When lightning strikes a building, it can cause significant damage and pose serious safety risks. Our local San Diego City, South West team wants everyone in San Diego to avoid lighting strikes and offer these safety tips:

Avoid Water: During a thunderstorm, avoid using water-related appliances and fixtures, such as sinks, bathtubs, and showers, as water is a good conductor of electricity. Also, refrain from taking baths during a storm.

Unplug Electronics: Unplug sensitive electronic devices and appliances to prevent them from being damaged by power surges caused by lightning strikes.

Stay Away from Windows: Avoid standing near windows, as lightning can shatter glass. Stay indoors and away from exterior walls.

Install Surge Protectors: Consider installing surge protectors for your home's electrical system to safeguard against power surges caused by lightning.

Stay Off Corded Phones: Avoid using corded landline phones during storms, as lightning can travel through phone lines.

Educate Family Members: Teach your family members, especially children, about the dangers of lightning and the importance of staying safe during thunderstorms

Clogged Storm Drain Causes Water Intrusion Issues in San Diego Homes?

12/5/2023 (Permalink)

A storm drain overflows during a storm. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to storm damage emergencies every year in San Diego. A clogged storm drain can cause flooding and water intrusion issues by blocking the flow of rainwater runoff and diverting it away from the drainage system. Here's how it happens:

Rainwater Collection: When it rains heavily in downtown San Diego, rainwater runs off various surfaces such as streets, sidewalks, and roofs. The city's stormwater drainage system is designed to collect this runoff and channel it away from populated areas to prevent flooding.

Storm Drains: Storm drains are an essential part of this drainage system. They are typically grated openings or inlets located on streets and curbsides. Their primary function is to collect rainwater from the surrounding area and direct it into underground pipes or channels that carry the water away from the city.

Clogged Storm Drains: If a storm drain becomes clogged due to debris, leaves, trash, or sediment buildup, it obstructs the flow of rainwater into the drainage system. This is a common issue in urban areas.

Localized Flooding: The accumulation of rainwater in the streets and surrounding areas can lead to localized flooding. This flooding can occur near homes, businesses, or in low-lying areas, including residential neighborhoods.

Water Intrusion: As water levels rise due to flooding, there is an increased risk of water intrusion into nearby buildings, including homes.

Severe storms have caused power outages and property damage in San Diego this year, and our local San Diego City, South West team wants everyone to stay safe while waiting for professional help to arrive. Here are some things that you can do until help arrives:

Contact Authorities: Report any downed power lines, fallen trees, or other hazards to the relevant authorities, such as the utility company, local police, or fire department. They can prioritize and address these issues.

Check on Neighbors: If it's safe to do so, check on your neighbors, especially the elderly, disabled, or those who may need assistance. Offer help or contact emergency services if you suspect someone is in distress.

Inform Loved Ones: Let friends and family know that you're safe and your current status. Staying in touch is essential, especially if you were separated during the storm.

Document Damage: Take photos or videos of any damage to your property. This documentation can be helpful for insurance claims.

San Diego Braces for Another Powerful Storm?

10/24/2023 (Permalink)

People watch as large powerful waves roll in ahead of a storm blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. Our technicians are trained and certified to restore storm damage in San Diego County.

San Diego County has experienced a wide range of severe weather this year, and our local San Diego City, South West teams want you to rest assured that we are Here to Help ® when the next big storm rolls in and causes property damage.

Now, before the next big storm arrives, it is a good idea to inspect your home and make any repairs to the exterior to ensure your home is ready for inclement weather. Here are three things you can do to minimize the potential for property damage:

  1. Clear Gutters and Drains: Before the rainstorm, make sure your gutters, downspouts, and drainage systems are clear of debris. Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, which can damage your roof, siding, and foundation. Proper drainage will help prevent water from pooling around your home, reducing the risk of flooding.
  1. Inspect and Maintain the Roof: Check your roof for any missing shingles, loose tiles, or other vulnerabilities. Ensure that your roof is in good condition to prevent leaks during heavy rain. If you identify any issues, address them promptly to prevent water from infiltrating your home.
  1. Secure Outdoor Items: Strong winds often accompany rainstorms. Secure or store outdoor furniture, garden tools, and other loose items that could become projectiles in high winds. If you have trees with dead or weak branches, consider trimming them to minimize the risk of falling debris.

Monsoonal Moisture Brings Summer Rain to San Diego?

6/27/2023 (Permalink)

Clouds fill the sky above Palm trees on a summer day. We restore storm damage “Like it never even happened” in San Diego County.

Every year, the Pacific Hurricane Season brings to San Diego an influx of moist tropical air from the Pacific Ocean during the summer months. Although monsoons are most commonly associated with South and Southeast Asia, they also impact areas along the western coast of North America. Monsoonal moisture leads to the development of thunderstorms and heavy rain. These storms can cause flash flooding and lightning. The introduction of moist air into the atmosphere causes massive cumulus thunderclouds to form, bringing cooling relief on hot summer days.

Our local San Diego City, South West responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year. After any weather event, it is a good idea to inspect your home or business for signs of water intrusion from the rain. Some signs of water intrusion include:

  • Water stains on the attic ceiling, roof, or walls

Lightning Strikes Homes in San Diego Neighborhood?

6/20/2023 (Permalink)

Lightning strikes fill the sky. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego County.

Although once a rare event, lightning has become a more frequent occurrence. Our local San Diego City, South West team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to storm damage emergencies. Here are some tips for staying safe during a lightning storm from the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

If you are caught in an open area, act quickly to find shelter. The most important action is to remove yourself from danger. Crouching or getting low to the ground can reduce your chances of being struck, but it does not remove you from danger.

If you are caught outside with no safe shelter nearby, the following actions might reduce your risk of being struck by lightning:

  • Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks.
  • Never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.
  • Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water
  • Stay away from objects that conduct electricity

Although San Diego is known for its beautiful, temperate climate, we do experience severe weather events, including flooding. Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to storm damage emergencies every year and offers these flood safety tips from the Red Cross:

  • Flash floods can be sudden and violent. You may have little to no warning. Designate a place on higher ground that you can get to quickly. Plan to move to higher ground before flooding begins.
  • River floods: Know if you are in an area that is prone to river floods. Review your evacuation plan so that you can leave quickly if officials advise you to evacuate.
  • Storm surge: Be prepared to evacuate immediately if local officials advise. A storm surge can cause water levels to rise quickly and flood large areas in just minutes.
  • Coastal flooding: Be prepared to evacuate immediately if local officials advise. Move inland before flooding begins.

What Can I Do to Prepare for a High Wind Event in East Village?

6/6/2023 (Permalink)

Storm clouds fill the sky. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Diego County.

Each year there are between 10 and 25 Santa Ana winds events. Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to storm damage emergencies in East Village 24 hours a day. The National Weather Service (NWS) offers these tips for preparing for a high-wind event:

  • Trim tree branches away from your house and power lines
  • Secure loose gutters and shutters
  • Identify an interior room of your house, such as an interior bathroom, that you can take shelter in during high wind warnings
  • If you live in a mobile home, identify a sturdy building you can go to if the NWS issues a high wind or severe thunderstorm warning
  • Charge batteries of all essential items such as cell phones and booster packs, weather radios, and power tools such as a reciprocating saw, which you may need to clear debris
  • Update your emergency kit and be sure to include enough food and water to last for three days for each person in your home
  • Make a list of items outside your home you will need to tie down or put away so that they don’t blow over or fly away through a window. When NWS issues a high wind or severe thunderstorm watch, immediately secure these items to avoid damage or injury once the wind starts picking up.

Howling Winds Wreak Havoc on Homes in San Diego?

5/2/2023 (Permalink)

Trees have fallen during a major windstorm. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Diego County.

Sometimes residents are required to evacuate during a storm. Having an evacuation plan in place is a good component of a family safety plan. Our local San Diego City, South West team responds to wind and other storm damage emergencies every year. Here is some information on evacuation planning from the Insurance Information Institute:

  • Identify where you can go in the event of an evacuation. Try to have more than one option: the home of a friend or family member in another town, a hotel, or a shelter. Keep the phone numbers and addresses of these locations handy.
  • Map out your primary routes and backup routes to your evacuation destinations in case roads are blocked or impassable. Try to have a physical map of the area available in case GPS satellite transmissions are down or your devices run out of power.
  • Pre-arrange a designated place to meet in case your family members are separated before or during the evacuation. Ask an out-of-town friend or family member to act as a contact person for your family.
  • Put all evacuation plans in writing along with pertinent addresses and phone numbers and give them to each member of the family. Note that many home printer inks are NOT waterproof, so take appropriate precautions to ensure legibility.
  • Listen to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio or local radio or TV stations for evacuation instructions

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

A flooding street is shown. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Diego County.

Our local San Diego City, South West team has been busy responding to flooding and storm damage emergencies. Since January, San Diego has experienced many bouts of inclement weather: heavy rain, wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, and snow in the mountains. Scientists warn that the series of rainstorms caused by atmospheric rivers, coupled with the heavy snowfall in the mountains across California, may contribute to the development of an ARkstorm.

What is an ARkstorm?

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), “ARkstorm” stands for Atmospheric  River 1000 years storm,” a powerful storm that exceeds levels experienced once every 500 to 1000 years. An ARkstorm scenario is one in which back-to-back storms occur in continuous week-long sequences where the rain rarely lets up, causing significant damage from flooding and water intrusion.

Heavy rain and flooding impacted many parts of San Diego’s coastal communities last month when recent storms took swept away sand tracts all along the coast. • Know the safest routes to and from home should flooding occur.
  • When placing your trash, yard, and recycle bins out on the street for collection, place each bin approximately two to three feet away from the curb, so they do not impede the stormwater flowing on the street.
  • Sweep up trash, sediment, and debris, and dispose of construction waste in the trash to avoid having these items enter and block the stormwater collection system.

When Rains Arrive

  • Report flooding to the City's emergency dispatch center at 619-527-7500

East Village Pets Unhinged By Severe Wind Gusts?

A scared pet is staying calm under a blanket during a wind storm. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Our local San Diego City, South West team restores storm damage throughout the year. East Village homes and businesses are buffeted each year by the Santa Ana Winds. Many pets become anxious during these wind events and don’t understand where the noise and wind are coming from, exacerbating the problem. Here are some tips from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for managing your pet’s anxiety during a storm or wind event:

How to Help a Scared Pet

  • Keep calm! Your dog is aware of your emotions; they are more likely to get upset if you are.
  • Let them hide. If they prefer to stay under the bed, in a closet, or bathroom, let them stay there.
  • Consider creating a safe place if your pet does not have a place to hide. Interior rooms with less noise or light flashes are a good place to start.
  • Try distracting your pet by playing games. You can turn on the TV, play soft music, or give them a food puzzle or kong filled with their favorite item are all great ways to distract your pet.
  • Anxiety vests or shirts may also help your pet feel calmer

Santa Ana Winds Cause Damage to Homes in San Diego?

11/21/2022 (Permalink)

Palm trees are blown over in strong winds. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in San Diego County.

Our San Diego City, South West team, responded to property damage emergencies last month when powerful Santa Ana Winds blew through Southern California. The Santa Ana winds are the most common in the fall when they bring hot, dry weather and strong downslope winds from inland to the coastal regions of Southern California. Although they are more common in the fall, they can occur at any time of the year.

In 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, these winds forced big rigs to overturn on major freeways and caused significant wind damage. Because the winds are so hot and dry, they also have fanned the flames of wildfires.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) suggests securing objects like furniture, gutters, and downspouts to prevent wind damage. Additionally:

  • Make sure that your dog’s house, garbage cans, and sports equipment are stored away or tied down
  • Seal cracks and gaps to prevent the wind from coming in
  • Trim trees and branches regularly. Your home should be at least a full-grown tree’s height away from the base of any tree, usually about 40 feet away.

A roof gutter system is clogged with leaves and debris after a storm. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in San Diego.

Our San Diego City, South West team responds to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Logan Heights. Last month, Tropical Storm Kay was downgraded from a hurricane and blew up the Baja Peninsula, bringing fierce winds, heavy rain, and mudslides to Southern California. Now that the storm has gone,  inspecting your home’s roof for visible signs of storm damage is a good idea.

Visible Signs of Storm Damage From the Ground

  1. Collection of shingle granules – If you see an abundance of asphalt granules in your yard and landscaping, your roof has storm damage.

  3. Property damage – If your vehicles and property show signs of damage, your roof may have storm damage, too.
  4. Broken, cracked, and missing shingles – Check for missing and damaged shingles, including curled, cracked, or torn shingles. Wood shingles can show signs of splitting, curling, or decay, and low-slope roofs can have cracks, tears, wrinkles, and blisters

Flooding the Gaslamp Quarter?

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

A scene of the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, California, during the day. We restore storm damage quickly and efficiently in San Diego.

This winter has brought heavy rain and intense storms to the Gaslamp Quarter. Every part of San Diego County has above-normal rainfall to date this season. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW offers this helpful tip from the Institute of Business and Home Safety for protecting your home from heavy rain:

Check wall air conditioners

Internal Drain

If the air conditioning unit has an internal drain, make sure the pipe size is adequate and water is running and flowing freely in order to handle a high volume of water.

Caulking of Air Conditioning Unit Sleeve

Look for any gaps, cracks, or other damage that indicates improper caulking around the edge of the sleeve to the exterior of the building. This increases vulnerability to water entry.

Orientation

Tilting the air conditioning unit sleeves slightly (two degrees) towards the exterior wall can significantly reduce the water’s entry.

Weather Stripping

Proper weather stripping between the air conditioning unit and the sleeve can reduce the water from entering.

If your home has wall air conditioners

  • Ensure the size of internal drain pipe is adequate and water is flowing freely
  • Ensure there is proper caulking and weather stripping around the unit
  • Ensure unit is installed with a 1/4-inch (two-degree) bubble tilt toward the outside

SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has been mitigating and restoring storm damage for San Diegans for many years. We haven’t seen anything like the Flash Flood of 1821 recently. Here’s what happened that year:

That September, a wall of water cascaded down the steep mountain slopes of the east county and filled Mission Valley overnight. Orange objects bobbed up and down like corks on the fast-moving current: ripe pumpkins, hundreds of them, snatched from the fields of El Cajon Valley. The torrent was so strong it forged a levee of silt along its southern shore. It closed the channel to San Diego Bay and changed its course to Mission Bay. Since the day before had been clear, no one expected such a sudden, overwhelming deluge.

Severe Weather Hits San Diego

Although thunderstorms are less common in southern California, there has been some thunderstorm and lightning activity in San Diego this winter. Thunderstorms are severe storms that can cause lightning, high winds, hail, flash flooding, and tornadoes. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has a team of storm restoration technicians on-call 24-hours a day to respond to storm damage emergencies. Here is some helpful information from the National Weather Service  about thunderstorm notification:

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Be Prepared! Severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. Stay informed and be ready to act if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued. The watch is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Take Action! Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Take shelter in a substantial building. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds. Warnings typically encompass a much smaller area that may be impacted by large hail or damaging wind identified by a trained spotter/law enforcement who is watching the storm.

Flood Warning for San Diego?

High tides are flooding a coastal walkway. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Downtown San Diego!

Surf’s Up San Diego?

Last month brought unseasonably high temperatures to San Diego County and a high surf advisory and flood warning for the coastal towns. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States, and floods may:

  • Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges, and overflows of dams and other water systems.
  • Develop slowly or quickly. Flash floods can come with no warning.
  • Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings, and create landslides.

SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW responds to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day and can typically be on-site within four hours of your call. FEMA offers these instructions to follow if you are under a flood warning:

  • Find shelter right away.
  • Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
    • Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.
  • Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.
  • Depending on the type of flooding:
    • Evacuate if told to do so.
    • Move to higher ground or a higher floor.
    • Stay where you are.

Strong Storms Cause Water Damage in San Diego?

12/7/2020 (Permalink)

A tree is shown being buffeted by strong winds. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Logan Heights.

Strong Storms Cause Water Damage in San Diego

It’s that time of year again, and San Diego knows that rain and strong winds can cause storm damage to their homes and businesses. San Diegan homeowners were able to prepare for the first storm of November by obtaining sandbags from local fire departments in areas where water typically comes down onto their houses and can intrude into their homes, causing property damage.

I was shocked when this storm system landed, bringing strong winds of up to 25 miles per hour and anywhere from .14 inches to 2.70 inches of rain to various cities in the county. Freezing temperatures in the higher elevations brought 7 inches of snow to Mount Laguna, and many students in Julian got a snow day! SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has been serving the San Diego community for years, and helps residents mitigate storm damage no matter how big the job is. Our 24-hour emergency service has teams of highly trained storm and water restoration technicians on call and ready to respond to your storm damage emergency at all hours.

A tree is shown being buffeted by strong winds. We are storm damage restoration specialists in San Diego.

Strong Winds Can Cause Property Damage

San Diego is no stranger to strong winds. Last month we saw a record-setting Artic air mass from the Rockies and Great Basin cause some of the strongest Santa Ana winds to blow through the southern California region. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service (NOAA), Santa Ana winds are “Strong down slope winds that blow through the mountain passes in southern California. These winds, which can easily exceed forty miles per hours, are warm and dry and can severely exacerbate brush or forest fires, especially under drought conditions.” SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has seen firsthand the damage strong winds and storm damage can do to property in the Logan Heights area, and our 24-hour emergency service allows us to mobilize teams quickly, so we can arrive and immediately begin securing the property and repairing the damage.

If you experience property damage from high winds or any other type of bad weather, we have the training, equipment, and experience to mitigate the damage and restore your home or business back to preloss condition quickly and efficiently.

Pacific Hurricane Season in San Diego?

High winds and huge waves batter the San Diego coastline during a storm. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Diego City.

Pacific Hurricane Predictions for 2020

According to the United States Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a near, or below-normal hurricane season is predicted for the Central Pacific region. The NOAA report forecasts between two to six tropical storms, including tropical depressions, named storms, and hurricanes. Hurricanes moving through Baja California Sur are known to bring their high winds and rain to San Diego as they rotate clockwise up the coast and inland. You never know when San Diego might experience hurricane or tropical storm damage, but SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW is ready to respond to any storm damage emergency you may have. The NOAA describes some of the hazards to expect when a tropical storm hits:

  • Storm surge can bring an abnormal rise in water levels due to high winds, and is the leading cause of hurricane-related deaths in the U.S.
  • Flooding from heavy rains can persist for days after the storm has ended
  • High winds can cause signs and items left outside to become dangerous flying missiles
  • Dangerous waves can harm coastal residents and mariners

Tsunami in San Diego?

A large Tsunami wave is shown ready to crash onto the shoreline. Storm damage can take many forms in the Gas Lamp Quarter.

Tsunami’s Happen in San Diego

In February a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Chile caused Tsunami warnings to be in effect for the western coast of the Pacific Ocean all the way up to San Diego and north to Santa Monica. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA), a tsunami is a series of waves caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic eruptions. As the waves travel inland, the waves build and become larger the closer they get to the shore. Fortunately for San Diego residents, SERVPRO® of San Diego City  SW has years of experience dealing with all kinds of storm damage and no job is too big. Here are some safety measures you can take if you are under a Tsunami warning in the Gas Lamp Quarter:

  • First, protect yourself from an Earthquake. Drop, Cover, then Hold On.
  • Get to high ground as far inland as possible
  • Be alert to signs of a tsunami, such as a sudden rise or draining of ocean waters
  • Listen to emergency information and alert
  • Evacuate: DO NOT wait!
  • Leave as soon as you see any natural signs of a tsunami or receive an official tsunami warning

Monsoon Moisture and Thunderstorms in San Diego?

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

The southern Pacific Ocean and coastline is shown with heavy clouds above, hinting at storms to come. Thunderstorms are known to happen in San Diego in the Summer.

North American Monsoon

Did you know that monsoon moisture from Mexico can contribute to summer thunderstorms in San Diego? According to a report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA), an intraseasonal weather system, called a Madden-Julian Oscillation pattern, can have a significant impact on regions that experience rainy seasons during the Summer, which in turn can impact rainfall in the San Diego region. Last year we experienced thunderstorms from the desert regions all the way to the coast that caused flash flooding and closed roadways. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW has years of experience working on storm damage cleanup and restoration jobs all over the city and offers some tips from the National Weather Service to stay safe in the event you are caught in a severe thunderstorm:

  • If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to get struck by lightning
  • Stay inside a sturdy building or shelter that can protect you from lightning, hail, and damaging winds
  • Stay away from windows
  • Bring your pets inside
  • Postpone outdoor activities until the storm has passed

Firestorm Damage in Logan Heights?

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

Sunrise over the desert brings with it hot, dry Santa Ana Winds to Southern California. Santa Ana winds are a common occurrence in San Diego.

Santa Ana Windstorms

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA), Santa Ana winds occur in southern California and bring strong, hot, dust-bearing winds to the Pacific Coast from inland desert regions. These hot, dry winds are known to contribute to wildfires as they dry out vegetation and create the optimum setting for combustible fuels for fires. SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW wants the residents of Logan Heights to be prepared and offers these tips from the County of San Diego and the National Fire Protection Association for landscaping around your home to prevent firestorm damage:

California State law requires that residents treat 100 feet of defensible space around their homes.

  • Remove dead vegetation and other flammable materials
  • Keep your lawn hydrated and maintained
  • Prune tree limbs
  • Stack firewood away from the home
  • Make sure the home's address is visible to emergency vehicles

Storm Damage Cleanup Experts in San Diego

This is a before photo from a category 3 storm cleanup that SERVPRO of San Diego City SW performed.

Storm damage isn't something that's usually on your mind as a homeowner or property owner in San Diego. We get it, we live in the land of sunshine and moderate weather pretty much year-round.

But storm damage in San Diego can and does happen. Just last summer, there was a sudden 12 minute downpour in south San Diego that caused severe damage to a commercial property that we did the emergency water cleanup work on.

If storm damage does hit your San Diego property, there is no one better to call than the team of SERVPRO of San Diego City SW. Not only do we do year-round water cleanup work here in San Diego County, but the last several years we've traveled to both Texas and Louisiana to assist with hurricane cleanup efforts there.

So when emergency water damage here in San Diego strikes your property, call us 24/7 at 619-269-5004.

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW and Hurricane Harvey

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Here's one of our owners, Ben, walking back to the car after doing a walk through for a family affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Back when Hurricane Harvey struck the Gulf Coast in 2017, we all knew pretty quickly that the devastation would be wide and massive. What we didn't know is that so many of our incredible team members would volunteer to uproot themselves from their daily life here in San Diego and travel to Texas to assist with cleanup efforts.

Once we got word that floodwaters were receding, 6 of our team members as well as our two owners, Ben and Jordan, made the drive out to Houston where we had rented an AirBnB and began cleanup efforts for a number of families in the greater Houston area.

All in all, our team was out there for about 5-6 weeks. They said goodbye to their families and normal lives, because they knew this was a historic opportunity to assist families who needed the help getting back into their homes.

We made lasting relationships and our clients have invited us to stay with them anytime we're back in town! Though hopefully next time it'll be for fun, and not for a natural disaster cleanup.

When Unexpected Storm Damage Ruins Your Home

7/7/2017 (Permalink)

Here in beautiful San Diego, we don't often have severe weather. But residential storm damage does happen each and every year. If mother nature takes its toll and damages your property, use these 7 tips for cleaning up after a storm.

1. Get Protective Clothing. Prior to going inside your home, it is imperative that you wear protective boots, clothing, gloves, eye protection, and a mask. Flood waters carry sewage, bacteria and chemical compounds that may be dangerous.

2. Document the Damage.  To help with insurance and FEMA claims, you really need to document the damage as soon as it's safe to do so. Take photos and videos of your entire home from each and every angle. Make sure to get exterior and interior photos!

3. Water Extraction.  This, you may need help with. Flood water contains potentially dangerous bacteria, rodents, and insects. It's recommended that you have water extraction handled by a locally owned and operated professional disaster response team.

4. Open Windows. Circulating fresh air is an important step for cleaning up after flood damage and preventing mold growth.

5. Remove Personal Items. Furniture, clothing, and other items in the house can be removed to speed the drying. Prior to throwing away damaged items, take photographs, and have them evaluated to see if they can be cleaned and restored.

6. Remove Carpeting, Wet Drywall, and Insulation. If the storm water contains sewage, which many floods do, the flooring in the home will probably have to be removed. Drywall and insulation that has been touched by flood waters and saturated will also have to be removed. This helps prevent future mold growth.

7. Scrub Every Surface.  Each and every surface should be scrubbed with a powerful disinfectant. Your local SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is available 24x7 and stands at the ready to inspect, extract water, disinfect, dehumidify, and restore your home quickly.

This list might seem overwhelming, and it is. Cleaning up and restoring your home after a storm or water damage in San Diego requires hard work, proper tools, and specialized equipment. SERVPRO of San Diego City SW Is locally owned and operated, and we'll work directly with your insurance company for a stress-free claim. Call us 24/7 at (619) 269-5004.

Rain, rain go away

Rain, rain go away

What's one of the most common natural disasters in the U.S.? If you answered "floods", you are correct!

Heavy rainstorm can cause incredible damage to your property! Make sure you are prepared. Though heavy rain in California is rare, it DOES happen, and we've seen all too well the damage it can do to unsuspecting homeowners and property owners who aren't prepared for the aftermath of that.

Here at SERVPRO of San Diego City SW we like to be helpful, so here are a few tips to help your home or business avoid floods:

1.) Purchase flood insurance! Get a call in to your insurance agent to ensure your insurance covers floods

2.) Make sure your rain gutters and other drainage systems are installed properly, and clean out your rain gutters frequently

3.) Fix LEAKS IMMEDIATELY. Do not wait until it's too late!

4.) Spend some extra money to install a rubber roof underlayment. It's a waterproof barrier that goes under the shingles and protects your home from water intrusion

If you do experience a flood in your home or business, call us. SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is available 24/7 at 619-269-5004. We'll help get your property back into shape "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW Goes East For The Louisiana Flood of 2016

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW Goes East For The Louisiana Flood of 2016

Summer of 2016 brought some of the worst flooding to the state that it has ever seen, causing over 40,000 homeowners to suffer damage.

During huge national storms like this, SERVPROs from across the country band together to mobilize efforts and assist those affected.

Our location, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW, was one of them.

We arrived in Lousiana last August with several crews from our location and immediately began assisting homeowners with demolition, cleanup, drying and restoration efforts. Our teams were onsite for over a month, during this time we built close relationships with the people we served, who were incredibly thankful to SERVPRO franchisees for offering these emergency services.

One of our owners, Jordan, had this to say about his experience, "Seeing what these families had to endure was heartbreaking. We were happy to be involved and in the trenches assisting them with rebuilding their homes and their lives."
